The Elephant in the Room: Kenneth Murray.

    Discuss.

Took a huge step back last year. Looked completely lost at times. Then they start trying him at edge?

We need a break out season from our 1st rounder. He should have plenty of open lanes to fill with our new additions. No excuses now, he should be free to roam the LOS.

Hoping better DL play in front of him allows him to play to his strengths.

Thought he turned the corner during our embarrassing shutout loss against New England in 2021. He was the only player worth watching that day. Maybe he needed a year to learn Staley's system. At least that's whet I hope.

Make it or go away year for Murray. If he sucks again they release him next off-season. His salary this season is $1.8 mill, it jumps to 2.4 mil in 2023. If they release him, I think there is a cap hit, dead cap money, but I'm not sure what it is. The team also has the prerogative of exercising the 5th year option on him next off-season, but he would have to have an amazing season in 2022 - a complete turnaround - for that to happen.

People keep talking smack about him but if you misuse a player who's fault is that.. Let him play +-5 yards from the line of scrimmage and let DB's handle pass protection past that point. I think he will become the crazy tackling machine we expected.

Thought I would post his highlight film again. If all he has to worry about is 5 yards down field and and keeping everything in front of him this guy is a monster.

May not be a popular concept, but they may well try him at edge again...coming out Mack was 10 pounds heavier, and had a wee bit more length, but Murray a little speedier and agile...otherwise somewhat similar body types...possible understudy to Mack? That is a crowded LB room with Tranquil, Amen, and Niemann...as I said in another thread, we may be seeing a ton of 5-1-5 packages...not a lot of room for Murray, unless he turns a corner and really gets it this offseason...or he cross trains at edge again. Just a theory. On the other hand, in a 5-1-5, the lone LB does just what Murray does best...stay close to the line, and run to the ball....make a play.

Not counting on Murray for any real contribution in '22, so ANYTHING he can add to the defense would be a plus in my mind. I don't know if you can just play him where he'd perform his best, if that's not where - or the way - Staley's defense needs him to play.

I think he's cut after this season. Out LB corps is a real weak spot on the defense.

Sadly, that is a possibility...Staley didn't pick him, he was a total Lynn pick..a consolation for TT's Herbert selection...but I am crossing my fingers Staley molds him into something very useful for us, wherever that may be.
