    Welcome FA CB Bryce Callahan

Chargers signed CB Bryce Callahan, formerly of the Broncos, to a one-year contract.

Callahan played fairly well for Vic Fangio in Denver after being ported over from Chicago in free agency; he just couldn't stay healthy. He managed just 655 defensive snaps in 2020 and 504 in 2021 over 21 games. The Chargers are fairly set with JC Jackson, Michael Davis, and Asante Samuel at corner. Callahan will be a depth piece, and perhaps play a role on pure passing downs.

Gonna be some serious competition on the defensive side of the ball for roster spots this year.

Knows the scheme. Significant injury history and may be wearing down.

We need a few players to keep the IR staff busy.

I think Staley wants at least 5 competent CBs on the team. This is probably bye bye for Campbell unless he beats out Taylor in camp.

He was the guy I was expecting sans a RT along with Fox, Looking forward to a lot of dime defense with Derwin in the box as long as that scheme is good enough against the run.
If Callahan stays healthy (big if) and Woods pans out we can say bye to Hall and Campbell. Might be the best way to play KC and Vegas especially.
It is crystal clear now why Kyzir was not retained and no LBs were drafted once we got Reeder.

                  OLB Mack-Bosa
                  ILB Derwin
                  CB JC-ASJ-Davis
                  S Adderley-Woods

I mentioned this in the FA thread as well but I think Callahan gives the rookies a veteran example in the slot while JC, ASJ, and Davis fill the outside roles (ASJ and Davis probably rotating based on offensive personnel). Last year with ASJ Staley said he didn’t want to overload him with multiple positions and I expect even more of the same for the rookie CBs this year. Callahan gives that ‘slot group’ a veteran presence to mimic other than Campbell and Hall.

Also more seriously when the Chiefs run empty sets with MVS-Juju-Kelce-Moore-Hardman (and they will) we need to be able to match up. They wore down our depleted sexondary last year week 14.
