Crowd that DB room, crowd it good. We had PS guys as backups, upgrades required.

I think TT has done a pretty good job of that. Carrying over Derwin, Nas, ASJ, and Davis then adding expected impact guys of JC, Callahan, and Woods. That’s 7 DBs before we really get to the ‘backend roster’ type players like Gilman and Webb (both with another year in the system now and Webb healthy) as well as Taylor, Leonard, Campbell, and Hall. We carried 10 total DBs on the opening roster last year so the room is definitely crowded with more talent than last year, let’s hope it brings out the best.

We lost at least 2 games last year from lack of DB depth.

Ya, okay. I still have the memories of 5’-10” #43 Davis thrice being burned down the sidelines. That will undoubtedly get corrected this season.

#43 Michael Davis is 6'2". I don't doubt you have memories of him getting burned down the sidelines. I just don't think it is because he is short. He has good height. There aren't too many CB much bigger than him. There are plenty of guys who are better players than he is. Height is just one small part of it. If you have it, you have to know how to use it. If you don't have it, you need to figure out how to play to minimize that attribute and maximize your other attributes to overcome it.

Darrell Green, HOF CB for the Redskins was 5'9" and very, very few passes got completed against him in a career that lasted almost 20 years. Ronde Barber (HOF CB/S for Bucs) also was 5'9" and he ran a 4.68 40 at the combine (his pro day wasn't much better) and he played from 1997 to 2012, and was the active leader for defensive TD scored when he retired. Green had world class speed, and Barber was really, really quick. But had elite technique, and played really, really smart.

Too much emphasis is made on physical ability sometimes, and shortcomings can be overcome by great technique and how fast a player can process the game going on around them.

Looking at this list, I think Staley probably wanted to add some more vet players who can show all the younger guys what it takes to be a true professional. I saw an interview where the OL guru Duke Manyweather was talking about why he thought Slater was so good for us, and he felt like a big part of it was seeing what it took to prepare and practice like a pro.

Derwin is a good example, but having another one wouldn't hurt. And a guy like Bryce Callahan, a guy who is not overly gifted is a good example of how less talented guys can overcome their limitations through technique and preparation.
