Hopefully we clinch before going to Denver week 18.
Still feels weird saying "week 18"

I hope this is true for the Chargers@Chiefs game, but doubt they extend it to San Diego.

Popper’s schedule breakdown and record prediction:

The Chargers open with a chance to avenge last season's crushing Week 18 loss to the Raiders that kept them out of the playoffs.

          Week 1 keys to victory
The Chargers will open their season by hosting the Raiders at SoFi Stadium. It will be a rematch of the 2021 season finale — an epic game in Las Vegas that the Chargers lost in heartbreaking fashion in overtime to miss the postseason. Revenge will certainly be on their minds. The Raiders have a new coaching staff and also traded for arguably the best receiver in football in Davante Adams. The early keys? Whoever is playing right tackle must slow down Maxx Crosby, who torched Storm Norton in that Week 18 matchup. And the Chargers’ defense must force the second era of the Adams and Derek Carr connection into a rocky start. Adams and Carr, of course, were college teammates at Fresno State. Newly acquired star cornerback J.C. Jackson should help the Chargers in that cause. He is going to follow No. 1 receivers this season for Staley’s defense.

Must-watch game: at Kansas City, Week 2
Two division games to start off the season, capped off by a quick turnaround for a Thursday night contest on the road at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 2. The Chargers and Chiefs played two thrilling games last season. The Chargers won the first. The Chiefs won the second in overtime. As long as Patrick Mahomes is quarterbacking the Chiefs and Herbert is quarterbacking the Chargers, these games will be appointment viewing, especially when they are playing a prime-time game. Or Prime-time game, now that Amazon has the rights to Thursday nights.

Toughest stretch: Weeks 10 to 13
This four-game stretch is a gauntlet, and the Chargers will not have a bye week — or even a post-Thursday mini-bye — to look forward to afterward. The 49ers, Chiefs, Cardinals and Raiders all made the playoffs last season. They combined for a 43-25 record. The Chiefs and 49ers both made their respective conference championship games. This will be a make-or-break stretch for the Chargers in the second half of the season.

Game that has gotten tougher: Broncos, Weeks 6 and 19
Denver now has a quarterback, and that makes these two division matchups exponentially more daunting. Russell Wilson will look a whole lot different than Teddy Bridgewater or Drew Lock. And the Broncos bolstered their defense with the addition of free agent edge rusher Randy Gregory.

One game the Chargers can’t afford to lose: at Houston, Week 4
The Chargers missed the playoffs because of an inexcusable loss at the Texans in Week 16. This is another chance at revenge. Houston added some talent — namely No. 3 pick cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. — but this is a game the Chargers should dominate to pad their win total early in the season and make up for last season’s embarrassment.

Best offense the Chargers will face: Chiefs
Take your pick here. The Chiefs, 49ers and Rams all finished in the top 10 in Football Outsiders’ offensive DVOA. The Broncos finished 12th and added Wilson. The Raiders added Adams. Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is a handful for any defense. The Chargers could end up having to face Deshaun Watson depending on when the NFL concludes its investigation into the 22 civil lawsuits filed alleging sexual assault and misconduct. The Browns had the best rushing offense in football last season, according to Football Outsiders’ DVOA. The Colts ranked second. But I am sticking with the Chiefs. I know they lost Tyreek Hill this offseason, after trading the speedy wideout to the Dolphins, who the Chargers also play this season. I will bet on Mahomes leading an outstanding offense until I am proven otherwise.

Best defense the Chargers will face: Rams
The Battle of L.A. will take place in Week 17 at SoFi Stadium on Sunday night. The Chargers are the home team. The Rams lost mid-season acquisition Von Miller in free agency. But they added six-time All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner in the middle to complement Aaron Donald up front and Jalen Ramsey on the back end. The Rams finished fifth in Football Outsiders’ defensive DVOA in 2021. I imagine they will be similarly productive this season.

          Predicted record: 11-6
I correctly predicted the Chargers record last season at 9-8. Take that for whatever it is worth. I believe this is the season the Chargers get over the hump — 11 wins, and their first division title since 2009. They have one of the best quarterbacks in football. They strengthened their offensive line with the addition of first-round pick Zion Johnson — even if their options at right tackle leave something to be desired. The defense is markedly improved, and that was the Chargers’ biggest weakness last season. With a top-five offense and a better defense, the Chargers are going to be firmly in the mix for a championship in 2022. Book it.

          Predicted AFC West finish
          1. Chargers
          2. Chiefs
          3. Broncos
          4. Raiders

This is arguably the best division in football, and it is going to be a bloodbath this season. You could put these teams in any order, and I would not have an issue with it. Buckle up. We are going to have some fun.

I don’t love the LV short turn around to KC to start the season but it could work out to our advantage. Team should come out at max intensity for the revenge game. 2 division games where they really won’t be able to prepare for Staley’s new look D. KC will still be trying to establish a new offensive identity without Hill. We have all summer to figure out an effective anti-Crosby measure for week 1. After that fast start we get the week plus to prepare for what should be an easy game, so we can get some early self-scouting in.

Wish the bye was a few weeks later in the season but I guess we will have to just look forward to our first round bye come playoff time.

Offenses usually start the season ready to go...... defenses can take several or many weeks to become what they will become ...especially a defense like the Chargers who have replaced half the defense..... our offense will need to light it up especially early in season.....

I still wish NFL would give Chargers a full week to prepare for KC..... especially for a road game(home teams win a huge percentage of the thursday games)..... it would make a much better and fairer game.... also those extra short weeks are bad for players health..... it takes most of a week for a body to recover from a football game....

one interesting consideration is how many times will Chargers play a team coming off a bye? Years ago when NFL started the byes, Chargers got a bye on week one!.... and also played around 6 teams coming off their bye, so with 2 weeks to rest and prepare..... I was hoping moving to LA would improve NFL's view of and treatment of Chargers.....

The schedule is pre-determined based on how you finished the year before. It has nothing to do with favoritism. The only way they could have played a game in a different time zone was if the NFL sent them overseas for a game.
