    Post Draft OL Discussion

OT Darryl Williams is still available in free agency. If we were to sign him wouldn't this be better than what we have?? He started every game with the Bills and they were a playoff team. Have to think TT is probably locked on to signing one of the vet OT's that will be released?

He regressed at RT, so they moved him to guard and replaced him with Spencer Brown this past season. We have a lot of guards currently.

He's still better than any OT we have other than Slater, and it isn't even close. Would you say Norton regressed based on the Raiders game. Cut Norton sign Williams.

Is he better though at this point? Staley has also shown no qualms at remaking this roster. Seems like if we wanted Williams on the cheap, we would get him. It seems like everything is pointing to Pipkins or even Feiler being the RT.

I just listened to Telesco being interviewed by Peter King today.
Telesco put great emphasis on the importance that the interior provides a wall for Herbert.
Tom Telesco tells Peter King how the right parameters came into place at the right time to sign Sebastian Joseph-Day and J.C. Jackson in free agency, acquire...

Just get use to Norton being the weak link to Charger Super Bowl aspirations.

I am confident that Charger fans will come around--discover the reality of what is happening at ORT--by about September.

The NO under Sean Peyton used to believe more in being strong up the middle in terms of pass protection was more important than at OT. The idea is that good pass protection up the middle stops quick inside pressure. Quick inside pressure is essential on quick passes (NO used a lot of quick passing game) because the QB can get rid of the ball before the pressure gets to them, even if the OL gets beaten. So, if you win the pass rush battles inside the only path to the QB is on the edge. The QB can still step up in the pocket vs edge pressure or throw the ball away because the rusher has a lot further to go to get to the QB.

The usual school of thinking in the NFL is that it is easy to find OG. It doesn't take a superior athlete to protect the QB inside, just good technique and plenty of C and OG have had great careers by just having good technique. Most sacks come from edge rushers and if you want to protect your QB from the edge guys it takes a superior athlete at OT to compete against all the amazing athletes playing edge. So, OT is the most important, and OG and C while still important, can be filled with lesser athletes who develop better technique.

NO also prioritized interior OL because of Brees’s height. The middle opening up allowed him to complete throws he wouldn’t normally be able to.

No surprise that Brees is staying with the Saints, where he’s ideally situated for a late-career Super Bowl run

The first is the ability to play within the pocket. Brees’s pocket mobility and awareness is as refined as anyone’s, which is how he has learned to create vision lanes for himself that overcome his 6’0” stature. The Saints have always aided this by investing heavily along their interior offensive line. For years they had two of the league’s seven highest-paid guards in Jahri Evans, Carl Nicks and, later, Ben Grubbs. Currently they have 2015 first-rounder Andrus Peat and pricey 2017 free agent Larry Warford at these positions, plus former first-round pick and Pro Bowl Seahawk Max Unger at center.

With a pure pocket passer like Rivers, the IOL was always more important than an RT. It’s because he could usually step up to avoid the edge rush. We just never did a good job of building that IOL after Dielman and Hardwick retired. I think the plan is turning Herbert into more of a pocket passer as well with the occasional out of structure play.

I hope you are right! But this is serious lets look at this a different way. If you look at the average salary a starting OT makes in the league and then look at what the Chargers are paying their 2 RT options, meaning what their value is as an NFL starter its scary.

Pip signed a 3 year contract for 3.6 million. Storm just signed a 1 year contract 895K. Now look at what the average OT makes in the league based on their value. IF the goal is to protect Herbert at all cost, why not invest in a better RT option.? Again the Raiders are going to line Max up with the RT opening day, what if he does what he did in the last game facing the same RT. It would seem almost like a repeating nightmare!

Protect Herbie and he will be unstoppable.
