You nailed it. A reach is from a butt hurt draftnick, either on TV or just on a forum. When the team did not pick who they thought the team should pick, that is a reach. Then the person goes into attack mode the rest of the players career. Unless the player is first ballot HOF the butt hurt will continue to call them a reach.

If a player is a solid starter then they cannot be a reach. Was Scifres a reach? The Chargers spent a 5th round pick on him. Some say you do not spend draft picks on kickers but he was an MVP of a playoff game. He was no reach. The Raturds spent a 1st on Seabass, he was not a reach. but again people will say he was.

Its nothing more than trying to get back at a said GM for not taking the pick they suggested. Nothing more, nothing less.

I think a ten-foot ladder should do it......
Thank God for morons. Without them who would the rest of us have to blame things on?

Agreed. On the bright side - this stuff give us something to complain / argue about until training camp starts

Part of why people think something is a reach is because of the mock consensus boards that we see but don’t actually reflect the consensus boards of each individual team, especially as we get pass the first round.

Here’s snippets from the Rams and Cowboys that offer some ideas of this widely divergent board:
“A lot of times, people want to get early into the fourth,” Snead said. “Or maybe (they want) to jump into the late third … a lot of times, it all depends on who is on the board. If a player (they thought) might be gone is still there — and it’s usually teams who have picked a first-rounder, picked a second-rounder, picked a third-rounder — and they’re willing to give up things later in the draft to go get that fourth player they feel like completes their draft.”

McVay said that their staff gathers intel about those respective teams and their boards, and they expect their phones to start ringing sometime around pick No. 75.

Stephen Jones said before the draft that the Cowboys had 14 to 16 first-round grades. After the first round, it was revealed that they had 14, which matches up with 14 names listed in the top box.

The consensus is a group of opinions - proven to be inaccurate most of the time, or at best not in alignment with the professionals who are paid paid millions and spend days researching prospects (and still get it wrong 1/2 the time), and our takes are opinions, so . . . . no one's going to 'win'.

There are many players whom were universally viewed as cant miss or nearly cant miss by literally everyone....... like Elway, Munoz, Reggie white, Lott, seau, Manning...... etc..... and they all turned out great as expected .....occasionally there are misses on those consensus top choices but misses on concensus top picks are not reaches......and its hard to criticize taking a chance on a consensus choice.....and sometimes injuries are what derail what would otherwise have been a great player......

what reaches are are choosing someone that literally no one or very few had ranked highly, like English, ..........or desperately choosing a QB high in first round who was a turnover machine in college, like Donald, and expecting him to suddenly not be a turnover machine in NFL?.... those are reaches..... lol

I would say a reach is drafting a player, usually in rounds 1-3, who is projected by a majority of draftniks and "experts" to be drafted much lower than his projection...a reach turns into a BUST when, after 2-3 years of play, said player consistently fails to perform up to level expected from draft slot...

Many players ID'd by the 'consensus' as can't miss players have been dogs (Robert Gallery, Vernon Gholston anyone?). This just illustrates how difficult the draft is.

My point is that the basis for defining a 'reach' has to start initially with an acceptance of the 'concensus' as accurate, which it is not and never has been.

I agree, and with one caveat, that 'reach' is only in the mind of the fan or professional draftnik (non-NFL). Publicly, no GM/exec will ever call someone else's pick as a reach, and I do think that a pick is what it is... they take who they want, without regard to "consensus" . I'd like all the draft picks to be contributors, which is the true measure of a GM's success vs. if he 'reaches'.

Jonas Mouton. I had 5th round - high priority FA.

That second round devastated me. Marcus Gilchrist and Jonas Mouton. We had an extra second-round pick after trading Antonio Cromartie. I was screaming at the TV to pick Justin Houston.
