    Let's watch preseason games.
Ek & Spiller are locks. Kelley, Rountree, Marks, Brown & Horvath will get some snaps vs to the ground contact.
just a guy is meaningless, talking about extra depth at a position. they have to be a better player. could be STs.
    10 DBs, 4 Edge, 6 DL, 5 LBs
    3QB, 5 RB/ FB, 5 WR, 3 TE, 9 OL 3 Specialists
It may get juggled a little, not much.

But as a rookie he gained 963 yds on 4.7 ypc and scored 6 total TDs. Maybe with a further upgraded OL, the Chargers can help make Kelley that type of player.
I really liked what I saw of Kelley in college. He seemed explosive there. And now I'm reading that he has more explosiveness at the pro level finally. This could be very good.

It may help to know that NFL Draft Buzz lumps all the O-linemen together in their rankings. So, Zion's #11 overall ranking was including all the OT's, G and C. He was actually the #3 ranked G overall, after Green and Raimann, so pretty close to your ranking. Also interesting to note that Zion had a better pass pro ranking than Green. Green was ranked #5 overall for O-linemen:

Rating: 90.5 Rank: #5 Forty: 5.24 Green has all the potential in the world - he has elite strength, is very quick for his size, and has tremendous drive in the running game. He isn't perfe...

He already had the physical tools to be successful so I’ll be looking to see if he finally settled down and learned how to run, if the light finally came on he could have a decent season.
Yep...like that goal line hurdle exposing the rock which he fumbled...if he can clean up some of these mental mistakes, AND show a better burst and vision, that would be nice...

Why?

edit: apologies, you asked me questions which I didn’t answer. I was kidding about HOF, it was a hyperbolic counterpoint hypothesis to your factless hypothesis that if they are playing equal that means something bad. Now - why are you disappointed?
I'm not disappointed in the RB situation nearly as much as the RT situation. I hope Kelly had improved and he's separated himself from Roundtree in camp so far so I believe it's possible he did improve. Sorry if I didn't make it more clear in my post.

I was focusing on the Norton and Pipkins part of your post and why people were disappointed neither has taken the lead yet.

I think instead of focus on one taking the lead or not, it should be if either of them has improved to the point they aren't a liability. I have seen training camp battles in the past where neither guy emerges, just one but occasionally, rarely, both will step up.

But besides, who really cares if it takes part or all of camp for one of them to distance themselves. In the end, it is about forcing them to develop as players through the competition. And if it takes all of TC for the competition to work itself out, so be it. That just means that the loser is potentiall that much the better for it, since they were performing at almost the level of the starter.

                  Valid points, all.

We'll see something for ourselves-- finally-- on Saturday vs. the Rams.

I don't know if he will play better this season or not. But it is really hard to watch his mini-presser and not root for the guy. He really comes across well.

Ha...good one, but good point...from bad to mediocre = improvement...

This Saturday MAY show something, but since teams don't game plan and a lot of starters aren't going to be playing, it may only show if they are NOT up to the challenge. Even if they play well, it just means they are one step closer to being ready. But one step closer (like Topcat asserts) may not be good enough. We will have to wait and see.

Remember that these preseason games are played more for player evaluation than to win. No doubt Staley would like to win, but he wants to get a feel for individual performances, how well they match up vs. opposing players, and how well they fit his scheme. Also, a lot of evaluation going on for players on the bubble. Do we cut them or not? Do we stash them on the PS?
