He had Manning in a weak division, so a clear path to the playoffs every season. And they got to fatten up on the Jags, Texans, and Titans for a better record and more home playoff games. What Coryell lacks in terms of SB success, he more than makes up for in his contribution to the game. As a small college coach he fathered the I formation, and that is still the basis of zone, power and single back running game. Then when he went to coach the Aztecs, he devised most of the concepts used as part of the modern downfield passing game. Using route combinations, pass protection adjustments, and sight adjustments for receivers to account for the blitz. He was also the inspiration for the run and shoot/spread crowd.Comment
