The Chargers quietly signed General Manager Tom Telesco to a three-year extension before the season, a team source said Sunday.
Telesco's contract originally was set to expire following the 2016 season. Instead, it will run through 2019.
Perhaps more interesting than the extension itself is that the team chose not to announce the deal when it occurred. A source said that, because it was struck so close to the regular season, it was not announced in an effort to keep the news from becoming a distraction. Rather, it was the team's plan to do so after the regular season. The exact date when Telesco was extended is unclear, although the source believed it occurred before quarterback Philip Rivers' extension was finalized on Aug. 15.
The Chargers, who are 3-8, will face the Broncos on Sunday.
A narrative to this season has been what, if anything, would develop with coach Mike McCoy and Telesco in regard to their long-term futures. Both of their deals were set to expire after the 2016 season. Instead, it is clear now that only one of their deals will. Telesco is safe. The team has shown faith in coach Mike McCoy and his staff, but naturally, those long-term decisions will be solidified after the season.
John Spanos, Chargers president of football operations, and Telesco will work in tandem to evaluate the year. Ultimately, it is Spanos' call on such matters. The team still has played only two of its six AFC West games. Four come in these next five weeks, starting Sunday at 1:05 p.m. That will provide clarity on what's to come.
