    1963 Chargers

Just finished reading a fantastic book called, 'The Uncrowned Champs:How the 1963 San Diego Chargers Would Have Won the Super Bowl'.

Its about our dominance in the 1963 AFL season and how we would have matched up against the NFL champs, the Bears. Inside information, predictions, stories, etc.

Love anything related to Charger history and recommend this book for sure. Anyone on here alive during this season and could give a fans take on it?

We will win another championships soon friends, I truly think we will.

Wow. Just wow. You don't know how this strikes me.

I remember none of this. As a kid, I sorta remember seeing some Paul Lowe highlights. Maybe the hit on Keith Lincoln. Bambi. Our finest hour right there.

Again, 26 Dec 1965 ... my literal introduction to Charger football.

Imagine what Sid's boys would have done to those sluggo NFL teams. 51-0.

Let's see ... '63. Would that have been the Cleveland Browns ?

That game was played at Balboa Stadium. Imagine watching Lance Alworth and the '63 Chargers at Balboa Stadium.

Chicago Bears. I read an article about this a while back, and the consensus was the Chargers would have destroyed the Bears. Unfortunately the first Super Bowl happened three years later.

That was fun to watch. Who is the genius who figured it would be good to put the goal posts on the end zone line? I had forgotten that was how it used to be.

The CFL has still goal posts on the end zone line.

I was at every home game that year, including the title game. It was a magical season, starting with training camp out near Jacumba IIRC. And believe me, that was the boonies then. I agree, the Chargers matched up well against the Bears on paper and even though a few years away from inter-league play, many thought they would have beaten the Bears. We'll never know. I remember the Patriots practicing before the title game at the old Navy Field, which was close to the bay and near what is now the Gaslight District. Not sure exactly how close it was to what is now PETCO Park, but in that general area.

As far as watching Bambi play in Balboa Stadium, let's just say I feel honored now to have witnessed that. He was one-of-a-kind. I got to play several high school football games in Balboa Stadium. Heck, when I was really young, we used to go to jalopy and motorcycle races there. I was even born right across the street from the "open" end of the stadium in what was then Quintard Hospital.

Like Roo, I hope to experience a championship season at least one more time.
