I'm at a crossroads and open to hearing cases for either.
We have a Staley thread, now Payton thread, if someone, perhaps and advocate for JH would please start one, I'm open.
Harbaugh has unfinished business in the NFL and fits my criteria of having been a successful HC and he’s been that at USD, SF and now Michigan. But he hasn’t been great at Michigan. It took him years to beat Oh State and he’s never been able to develop a quality QB at Michigan. The loss to TCU is a huge black mark for him.

Next year's schedule is BRUTAL and we are going to nose dive HARD. Best case, Staley is fired January 2024, after the Chargers turn in one of the worst seasons in franchise history.
Yeah, it's something I don't want to recognize at the moment. That scenario is Norv in 2012, McCoy in 2016, and Lynn in 2020 all over again.

He also said ownership is the most important factor so we are OUT.

That's not a complete doomsday scenario.

It would set up the new coach/GM in 2024 with a high draft pick and also a way to make a clean break from Herbert if he doesn't progress in 2023.

Nobody is untouchable on this team.

Ownership hasn't changed. He's made it known that he wants this job.

I understand what you're saying, but apparently he has a different assessment for whatever reason.

              .
I keep hearing this, but it's all assumptions from various podcasts and some vague stuff from ESPN's LA sports writer, a dude who mostly covers the Lakers.

Wasn't he at one of our games?

That's the best case? What would be the worst case?
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Yes but I'm not sure how much to read into that.

But he has very clearly said he values the ownership and front office situation.

Denver makes sense - winning franchise historically and a chance to "resurrect" Wilson, who probably reminds him a bit of Brees. And Denver made some deadline trades this year to acquire more draft capital to go after him.

                    That's my prediction.

The worst case? Staley stays, we go 8-9 or 7-10 next year, and he gets ANOTHER year (the last year on his contract).

If Payton thinks that Wilson reminds him, even a little bit, of Drew Brees, then he's probably the only one who thinks that. Their styles of play are very different.

Honestly think Denver makes the LEAST sense. If anything, he may hold out another year.
