Remember, VJ worked out of the slot a lot for us, as does Gates. Most of Gates career has been in the slot, since we don't use him as a classic inline TE that much.
Allen is not as big as Crabtree, who is taller and more solidly built. But Allen is actually quicker, so in many ways, he is better suited for the slot then outside.

In time, Allen will develop into a fine outside WR, but like most rookies, he needs to get somewhat stronger and learn to run routes to take advantage of his speed and great quickness. He is a terrific athlete who just needs to refine his game a bit. There where a number of people who felt he was the 1st or 2nd best WR in college last year, and he mostly fell because of the knee, not his actual abilities.
