    New QB Specific Helmet

    New quarterback-specific helmet.

I get it, the nfl wants to protect their money makers but what kind of message is it sending? I didn’t do a lot of research but I’m guessing the qb position has fewer concussions (other than the Miami dude) than most.
The NFL and its players’ association say a new quarterback-specific helmet will be available for the first time this season.

Heard on NFL radio that the new helmit is only 7% better prevention from concussion when their head hits the turf.

I guess that's better than nothing.

I read that this particular helmet is designed for quarterbacks. Also that there was already one developed for linemen so perhaps each position's helmet needs specific tweaking??
Thank God for morons. Without them who would the rest of us have to blame things on?

It's a Start at least...the only way you can have 100% improvement is "Don't play the game!".

I also read it could reduce concussions by 50%. So, the 7% on top of the protection already in place is probably more significant than it sounds.

The whole helmet thing seems to be so PR driven, physics is physics, they can keep redesigning helmets but none of them can stop the brain from sloshing around inside the skull when it’s jarred suddenly or when the person comes to a very sudden stop from being in motion…

there is a case to be made for going back to soft leather helmets as players would be less likely to use their heads as battering rams…concussions are a reality in most all sports I can think of, it’s just that football increases the likelihood of concussions…

The leather helmets would do nothing for players banging their head on turf, especially artificial turf. Might have a death on the field.

I remember watching a documentary once about birds that dive into the ocean for fish. The impact forces that they sustain on their head from crashing thru the water is ridiculously high, they’ve evolved an air sac inside their skull that inflates before each dive acting like an air bag inside their skull…their isn’t a helmet that humans can invent that will provide that type of protection for a brain that is so much heavier and larger in mass than a bird brain…you’re probably right about players landing on turf which is basically a carpet over a concrete surface…maybe creating a playing surface more like a boxing ring with artificial grass over the top would help, but that would be very expensive and the NFL doesn’t give a shit about players…

Helmets need a crumple zone like vehicles.

Not only would they reduce concussion severity but the number of helmets that would have to be replaced during a game would be a real verifiable tell of how hard the blows they are receiving to the head.

These new helmets do have a type of crumple zone, they are designed to sink in then pop back to shape after the collision, the intricate cuts in the designs allow those areas to flex inward like a crumple zone then pop back out, the inner liner then protects the skull from receiving the energy of the impact to a degree, but none of that can protect the brain from bouncing around INSIDE the skull causing tearing the lining of the brain and bleeding inside the skull…
