Chargers 2023 Draft: Value, Reaches and Steals

FYI I used the draft trade values ( where the player actually went vs where he was ranked) to measure the numerical value in each pick .For ex Quentin Johnson was ranked at 15 ( 1050 Actual value) but we got him at 21 ( 800 Pick value) so net value of 250.

This is just a quick look to measure each pick and limited as it doesn't consider trades, or need but FYI

We did ok on most picks. Great value again w Johnson and Daiyan Henley.

Rnd. Pick No. NFL team Player Pos. College Conf. pick act actual Value
    1 21 Los Angeles Chargers Quentin Johnston WR TCU Big 12 800 15 1050 250
    2 54 Los Angeles Chargers Tuli Tuipulotu OLB USC Pac-12 360 60 300 (60)
    3 85 Los Angeles Chargers Daiyan Henley ILB Washington State Pac-12 165 47 430 265
    4 125 Los Angeles Chargers Derius Davis WR TCU Big 12 47 306 (47)
5 156 Los Angeles Chargers Jordan McFadden OG Clemson ACC 28.6 272 (29)
6 200 Los Angeles Chargers Scott Matlock DT Boise State MW 11 222 2.6 (8)
7 239 Los Angeles Chargers Max Duggan QB TCU Big 12 330 0

These are always interesting. The fact that escaped mental patients assign the rankings makes them all the more fun.

Cool breakdown. I think it tells a pretty good story, I do wish we had different teams player rankings say 29 years later to really go back and analyze drafts. I know it would have to be pretty far out but the knowledge would be awesome.

This has always kind of got in my crawl a bit, too. All these rankings are subjective. I mean I guess you have to do some kind of ranking, but just because you give them one doesn't mean it's the be all end all.

Everything is just a subjection projection of how a college kid will fare against elite grown ass men. In the end it is a pointless exercise to keep us entertained in the offseason. We will know in 3 years how each pick turns out.

I like all our picks, but I think Duggan would have come here as a UDFA given his guys are here and provided a chance to learn under Moore, Herbert and Neismeier.
idk if Davis was a "reach" but I'm as hell glad to have an explosive and experienced returner.

Also, Kollman has Tuli as tier 2 edge rusher with Carter being the only guy in tier 1.
            .005 Brock Bowers, TE/HB/SR Georgia
.037 Braden Fiske, DT Florida St.
            .069 Mike Sainristil, CB Michigan
            .105 Brenden Rice, WR USC
            .110 Mason McCormick, OG/OC S. Dakota St.
            .140 Zak Zinter, OG Michigan
            .181 Nehemiah Pritchett, CB Auburn
.225 Ainias Smith, WR Texas A&M
            .253 Carson Steele, RB UCLA

The rankings are fairly accurate at the top of the draft .I noticed this tracking each pick to see who was left after the 1st etc.

Especially the 1st round. Only 3 picks in the 1st round were not players ranked in the top 33. In the 2nd, 11 players were taken who had a ranking below 65 so still pretty good. In the 3rd it was 19 (but there were 38 picks w supplementals, trades etc)

Please see below where marked w a blank if they were reaches out of the round ( ie a player w a ranking of say 40 taken in the 1st), Rank is actual rank

Seems like it . . . . . . . I know that player evaluations and rankings are performed by folks much smarter and more experienced than I, and there's significant time invested, but still . . . . . . the EMP's give them a run for their money

Really don't see any reaches or steals. Could have gone a bit differently, that's about it. It was for the most part a need filled draft.
