Neither pro bowl reciever was on IR last year. But one may not be here next season so why not get one now and give him experience for when we lose one. And its insurance for a injury during the season. I thought TE would be the same thought but guess not.

    Oh well, TE in 2024.

I am inclined to agree with this. We all saw how the offense production was off after Keenan went down - as the offense revolves around his ability to move the chains - and the best answer for what happened in 2022, was the best insurance policy for 2023, draft a WR #1 overall. Same applies in 2024 when Allen is likely let go due to his cap figure. WR was drafted in 2023 for this eventuality.

Same story with Khalil Mack. His last ride.

Concerning the offensive skills player position rooms, I am left wondering why the RB + TE rooms were left unaddressed. Perhaps Kellen Moore had time to breakdown and evaluate his offense and reported back to Staley and Telesco that they could go whatever direction they wanted to and he was content to work with that. This is speculative on my part, perhaps they were just ranked lower on the priority list to return specialist and backup QB.

As for myself, I believe that if Telesco hits on Johnston, then the Chargers will have the ultimate mismatch in a WR trio that forces you to be three deep at CB, and the best WR trio this side of the Bengals. If the model was what Joe Burrow has in Cincinnati, then Telesco is to be applauded for that move.

It seems like the purpose of the post is a post draft pre hindsight grade

          did we draft needs
did we over or under draft on the round level

in the heat of the draft moment the way the cards fell how did we perform

i think future materialization and performance of the draftees is another subject

that’s why I graded an A. Because we walked away with some pretty good prospects to be excited about and we didn’t giveaway draft choices to do it

Obviously hard to judge a draft right away, but I will say my areas of concern:

            - no TE?
            - our weaknesses every year are injuries along the OL and getting gashed against the run and it does not appear we have significantly addressed either

Someone earlier called it a typical TT draft likely with typical results. We shall see, but we do have a decade of data to back up that sentiment.

You can always try magical thinking. That's what I call doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. lol

My only concern was WR Derius Davis . There were better WRs available and I'm sure they could return kick and punts.

Going for the fastest vs the best was something Al Davis would do. This guy is so small that one good hit and he going to be fked up too. I just hope they use him well and he works out but this is a question mark IMO.

Draft picks: WR Quentin Johnston, DT Tuli Tuipulotu, LB Daiyan Henley, WR Derius Davis, G Jordan McFadden, DT Scott Matlock, QB Max Duggan

Analysis: This draft didn't make a ton of sense for Tom Telesco outside of the best pick, Tuipulotu and the highest-upside pick, Henley. Johnston was the wrong type of wideout to add in the mix for Justin Herbert, and then they doubled down on TCU types with Davis. Getting the Horned Frogs undraftable QB, Duggan, also was ridiculous. This wasn't the needed draft for a playoff contender, which also missed a running back given the concerns with Austin Ekeler.

The Sporting News' grades are in for the 2023 NFL Draft with all 259 picks in the books. Here are the best and worst classes, from the Steelers, Eagles and Colts as heads of the class to the Jets and Cardinals flunking out.

this actually is a favorable writeup: who cares what he thinks about Johnston not fitting their offense. What is their offense going to be?

If you saw my post on Moore's quad WR set tendencies - 3 WRs on the strong-side, 1 WR on the weak - imagine if they ran quads w/ Keenan, Mike Will, & Josh Palmer with go routes and Quentin Johnston singled up on the weak side.

Moore's overload offensive concepts, ones that helped make Dallas the #1 scoring offense in the league.

He was the best returner in the draft and as an added bonus can occasionally be used for a jet sweep and to go deep. Yes he is small, but I love the pick.

The sporting news is trash. Garbage. Johnston was wrong type of wideout? That is such a stupid take.

MW when actually on the field instead of injured is dynamic. So you go get a younger, faster more athletic version of MW and we don't need it? Great analysis. What a bunch of bullshit. He was the consensus #1 WR till the whispers that he's inconsistent catching. Then he slipped. The reality is there were a lot of poor passes thrown his way. I don't buy it, and with all the highlights from the combine to his game film it shows a DYNAMIC WR. He is the future of our WR corps. We got a lot faster at WR which is what me and a lot of fans were complaining about.

The sporting news can pound sand.

A healthy Herbert needs Johnston. No doubt about it. The Herbert who can let it fly with a flick of his wrist. I hope he's recovered from everything by September.
