At the end of the day, I agree with you; but I think it is more complicated than that, and there really are no set, easily identifiable boundaries to step, or not step over.

If things are off, Harbaugh and McDaniel will have long discussions on the problem, and possible solutions, and McDaniel will have to convince Harbaugh to stay the course.
Someone convinced Harbaugh/Hortiz to throw late round draft picks at the LT problem, instead of going with Jamaree Salyer
Hortiz runs the draft, sets his board after taking input from staff and coaches.
Harbaugh runs the team and delegates responsibilities as he sees fit. I'm sure he will give his HC of the Offense plenty of slack.

I don't think Popper is saying we shouldn't make McDaniel happy. I think he is saying that we are relying too much on McDaniel being the biggest change.

The bulk of Charger criticisms seem to be focused on the fact that for the last 2 seasons, our IOL has struggled, and the only upgrade we have is Tyler B. We added Cole Strange, who does not have much of a fan club, and Slaughter, who has no business being an OG, and only fits at C. I don't agree with those evaluations, but those are the arguments that others are making.

I think part of what is being forgotten is that Miami has had bad OL on paper, and despite that, they have played OK. Not great, but they had bigger issues to try and address and they were fairly productive anyway. Even this past season, with their skill positions banged up and trading Jonnu Smith, their defense was their weak link. Their OL could have been better, but it was better than ours.

I think some of it falls back on, "what makes a decent/good/great OL". I think part of it is that McDaniel seems to have a different idea of what kind of OL he wants. There is no coach anywhere who is content with bad players. I think McDaniel is looking for a different kind of player than everyone else. He doesn't care about the stuff that PFF cares about. So, I don't view Slaughter and Strange as bad OG, just that McDaniel has a contrarian point of view and isn't going to change.

I also think Chargers probably don't want to just grab guys with great PFF grades just cause. I do think other teams are playing those games to sell tickets and win the offseason. I think McDaniel knows he has to make us a serious challenger for a SB title and help Justin elevate his game, or he is never going to be a HC again. I think McDaniel and the Chargers have a plan. But selling out and spending all of our cap space to "win" the offseason on paper isn't part of it.

Also worth noting ... Seahawks last year

Going into the season, their OL had been ranked 31st overall the year before. Like us they had a lot of injuries.

FA signing Josh Jones (backup OT) -although we never really know how much a team is trying to spend and go after. I mean, what if they went after all the top OL prospects, but they just missed on everyone but Jones.

Drafted Zabel in the 1st round

          Still won the SB.

Both Chargers and Seahawks are outside zone teams.

Success breeds respect. I'm so looking forward to training camp and the ramp up to actual 2026 Season games.

Contenders for biggest change on offense are OLs Slater, Alt and Biadasz. OL coach Butch Barry , OC McDaniels and wide zone OL blocking among others. McDaniels brings a different package to the Chargers offense and yes , he's the big dog in that room as he should be.The Chargers Offense has struggled to be average at scoring and is a damned shame with Herbert at QB. We're all in on McDaniels.

And the biggest change of all. The first OC since Shane Steichan that can actually help and elevate the franchises best and most important player. Seems like an overdue, smart thing to do.

Winning in the playoffs will be a nice change. The Chargers have struggled to bring a team offense to the postseason.

Herb + Steichen would have torched the league the last 5 years together.

was thinking about Jim today at work:

If Chargers win SB that means Jim would have won at both elite levels of Football (College + NFL). Only 3 dudes have done that

When we brought in a novice head coach and fired Steichen the first thing I thought is "what can go wrong?!?!?!" I was not a big fan of letting Steichen go...
Chiefs won the Superbowl with 10 Rookies....

Well lets hope the Herbert/McDaniel combo is all we hope it will be and Herbo has a massive season and shuts up the annoying critics. Its the dead of summer when football media has nothing to do except for their stupid QB rankings , which tees up all kinds of shots at Herbert...more than any other QB. Today Herbert is apparently immature in playing the QB position.

I dont think they meant he is a immature guy. I think what that person meant was he doesnt take total command of the offense and runs what Roman calls. Sure he audibles some but as ive said before, he isnt at Rivers level in total command.

Chalk it up to ever changing schemes perhaps, maybe Roman wants him to run what he called....IDK. But Rivers if he had Roman as a OC and went to the line and saw how the Defense was lined up, ...he'd be, eff you Roman and change the play and part of the reason he often ran the clock down to 2 seconds which irritated some posters here for some reason.

I think thats what is meant by that but thats also my guess. He obviously isnt a immature guy.

Rivers used to run the offensive meetings...according to Keenan.
