Trading Herbert, the Chargers would incur a $130 Million dollar dead cap hit next year. They couldn’t trade Herbert even if they wanted to. And they don’t want to.
That’s just other teams fans hopelessly hoping.
The same thing is happening with Donko fans. Surtain is worth 2 1st round picks and we can just include him in any trade and yada, yada, blah, blah. And then reality set in. To trade Surtain would require wherever Surtain goes giving him a huge contract per his agent. If he’s so valuable, and so pivotal to the trade, you aren’t trading him and he just continues to play on his rookie contract. He’s immediately going to say, “I’m really good which is why you just blew you’re wad trading for me so, PAY ME or I’m sitting out.” The team taking him on would have already agreed to terms with Surtain on a new contract. And nobody cares that the Donkos thinks hes worth 2 1st round picks. The team trading for him will say, “Yeah, thats neato, but everybody knows what you are doing and that you are desperate for picks to go get a QB and he’s worth one 1st. Take it or leave it, but that’s all you are getting”.
MIN couldn’t sign JJ and Surtain together. And neither would budge in their demands.
Donkos would have to trade him somewhere who could incur his money demands then use the pick in a package to move up.
It’s fairytale dream world right now for a lot of fans, while a huge tsunami wave of reality is coming in a few weeks.

Hortiz and Harbaugh will build around Justin Herbert

yes the contract is expensive. you know what, "shtuff" happens. Mahomes, Allen, Burrows, Jackson, - -teams with good QBs pay for them
and they figure out the rest

Which is why the idea of Justin Jefferson makes no sense. 1) he will cost a lot of money 2) the OLine and defense need to be built up 3) The Chargers can draft WR for a fraction of the cost for the next give years

The chargers are going to be like the chiefs for success. Build through the draft, keep select higher priced players and others, they will let go as free agents or trade; or take the comp pick

One thing about Hortiz and Harbaugh - they know what Herbert is getting paid the next five years. No secrets - they can budget and build around that. They got the cap in order this offseason. Building up draft picks for 2025 and even 2024 - and go from there

You can't have a top notch QB and not pay him...the situation that many other fan bases find themselves in is truly unenviable, to think that the Viking fan base would waste part of their offseason arguing with each other about what it would cost to acquire Justin Herbert would be funny if it wasn't so damn sad...

In some ways, I think Harbaugh and Hortiz have it easy in terms of building the team and the cap - they know what Herbert is going to cost the next five years. There is not a "tbd" contract waiting to be signed. So they know how they need to build the team from a cap perspective. And if they do it right, they should be able to build around the salary of Herbert.

Granted, of course it would be better to be a winning team and have to adjust year to year around being good. But in this case, JH2 know what need to be done, how much cap they can use each year and move forward

Herbert's salary is going to be mid range within the next 2 years for QBs, look what the gambling profits are doing to the salary cap, how does it make any sense for a guy like cousins to only be making 5 mil per season less than Herbert, everyone knows he's not in the same tier talent wise and yet he got paid pretty damn close this offseason even though he's more than a decade older...with the cap continuing it's crazy upward trend, they will have no trouble surrounding their superstar with good solid players and great depth, the Chiefs have been doing it and we can too...

Dissly and Captain in one sentence is kinda insulting.
