What's up with Philon

Philon went from starter, getting puff pieces in the paper (likely to cushion the Bosa standoff) to a guy who isn't even in the rotation any more. He was inactive last week. He is not on the injury report. So did he tick someone off or is he just not a very good player at this point?

Our ace reporters have said zilch about this after building him up all off and preseason.

He was always going to be the backup to Bosa and Square finally played after his suspension, so he got Philon's snaps.

Philon is still young and inexperienced. Give him time.

Philon was raw when we drafted him. He's still a good project. He and Bosa will make a great furure pairing whenever we use 4 DL.

Is anyone else thinking that we now have a kick-ass d-line? I can't remember our d-line being this deep for a while. It's got to be the deepest area of our team...yes?

I am actually hoping that Bosa best trait, his hustle, starts to wear off on the rest of them. Mebane is also a hustle guy. Philon, Square and Liuget all have some quickness and pwer, and can be pretty good DL. THey certainly flash that ability. But they have to put it together.

When there is only 1 hustle guy on a D, then I think it is easier for other guys to write him off. Get a couple of them, everyone starts to get it.

FWIW, I think Mager and Brown are showing that too, just this is a DL thread.

Yeah, Bosa has fire. He has so much endurance too. I bet you his lungs are larger than most people's. Bosa reminds me of an Olympic level endurance swimmer that stays strong throughout while his competition weakens. And Philon seems like another guy that is all-out on every play. He's just doesn't have the endurance of Bosa. I don't know about Square. Seems like his stock went up while he was on steroids. I hope he's got something beyond the roids.

It seems like this is Brown and Bosa's defense now. As they go so goes the whole of the defense.

Some of it is just pure size. Philon was around 300 lbs when he was drafted. It's a lot easier to run around all day long if you are 20-40 pounds lighter. Philon is also an inside guy, while Bosa is an edge guy.

It's also not uncommon for younger up and comers to play well in preseason and then fade in the regular season. A couple of guys per team is pretty much the norm. Brown and Bosa didn't have a chance to shine during preseason. Brown was hurt and Bosa was holding out.
