When the preseason concluded at the end of August, who (in their 'right mind') envisioned that Scott Matlock would be seeing so much of the field, from so many different position groups?!?

Back at that time, my hope for Matlock was that-- in addition to meriting rotational snaps on the D-line, he'd also earn the role of fullback on 3rd and Short, or 4th and Short situations. And of course, plenty of action on special teams units.

Matlock has done all of that, and considerably more. He gets far more snaps at fullback than I ever imagined he would, because... he's not just the 'short yardage guy'. If the Bolts have a fullback on the field, it's usually Matlock. That means he's earned the trust of the coaching staff not just as a run blocker, but as a pass blocker, too.

On J.K. Dobbins' win-sealing TD run, Matlock owned his man on his blocking assignment. He's been conspicuous by his presence when good things happen on the field for the Chargers. One example-- I've noticed that even when Matlock isn't the one getting the sack, or the tackle, he's nevertheless RIGHT THERE around the ball and helping to disrupt offensive traffic.

Not saying he's been perfect, but-- JFC!!!-- He just keeps improving, and making fewer mistakes as he goes.

Pretty much every NFL team-- good OR bad-- has its stars. The difference between the mediocre teams and the outstanding teams often has a lot to do with getting significant contributions from Day 3 draft picks (like Matlock), and UDFAs. Here's to the Bolts finding more Matlocks! <hoists beverage of choice>

Anybody out there have access to Matlock's snap count stats? Please post them!
Its a cool story, for sure...if he continues to improve, and does what he does for several years of Harbaughs tenure, consistently...he wont be soon forgotten...and might just be my next jersey!
    Lone Bolt's Final Mock

Tyler Booker G, Josaiah Stewart Edge, Cam Skattebo RB, Mitchell Evans TE, Jamaree Caldwell NT, Isaac TeSlaa WR, Ahmed Hassanein DE, Craig Woodson S, Eli Cox C, Kalel Mullings RB

This is what good coaches do. Get the most out of players and probably more than Matlock even envisioned for himself. When he was drafted he had the famous quote, "I'm here to take souls". The staff saw something in this kid and to his credit he's put in the work to develop.

^ This...that's Matlock (yellow) moving quickly from his upback position in the I and sealing off Trey Hendrickson to help spring Dobbins on that TD run...and as mentioned earlier, Pip (blue) blocking TWO guys...and there's Zion sealing off the inside blocking his man out...a lot to like on this play...hat tip to Roman for great play design, and to the players for excellent execution...

Reminds me of when one of my sons was in a 6th grade class...schools are always chanting this mantra of raising test scores, and back then, they used the STAR test...the teacher was ranting about how she wanted the students to do their best on the upcoming test...a girl raised her hand and said, "last year I got a perfect 600 on the test"...the teacher replied, "there's ALWAYS room for improvement!!!"

Interesting, to say the least! Matlock has more than twice as many snaps on offense as he does on defense.

A Steeler, Chief, and Cardinal player were seen laughing at a bar. When asked what was so funny, they said, "Charger fans think their team is perfect"

I love it when the O line comes together.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
                    Let’s win one for Mack.
