I'd laugh my ass off if the 49er defense goes into the tank this year.

I doubt it. If they keep Staley's Asst HC role defined and limited to ultimately being a defensive game planner without playcalling duties, it will actually be a plus for them that he's there. As long as Staley is reigned in and confined to certain set parameters, I think he will actually thrive in that environment.

To be honest, I won't be surprised if he has another HC opportunity in several years. By that time, he'll have a rolodex of new coaching connections, and as long the Shanahan coaching tree sees value in him, whether it'd be McVay or Kyle Shanahan, someone will eventually give him another opportunity as a HC. By that time, he'd have learned what works and what doesn't under Kyle, and he'll take his learning experiences with the 49ers and Chargers with him.

Back when he was hired as HC here, I went on record on this forum stating that Staley would be a great HC one day, but it may not be with us. I'll continue to stand by that statement.
