Wes Chandler and John Jefferson were both selected in the 1st round of the 1978 draft, Chandler 3rd overall (Saints) and Jefferson 14th overall.

Chandler was clearly viewed as the more elite prospect, and his career stats no doubt validate that.

Accounts of Jefferson's decline and disappearance from the NFL have always failed to adequately explain what the hell happened. Pretty sure more was going on than met the eye of Joe Fan.

Meanwhile, look at some of the studs who were first round picks in '78:

Earl Campbell, Art Still, James Lofton, Ross Browner, Clay Matthews, and Ozzie Newsome.

I think Chandler's production fell off after that Raider helped him run full speed into the goal post.

Fouts would stick up for the guy who was playing WR for him.

JJ played for Fouts too. Wes was quick too ... great receiver, hardly missed a beat. What if Don had Fouts, JJ, Wes, Charlie, and Chuck at the same time ... ?

JJ fell off the map when he went to GB. Maybe he hurt his woohoo on the trip to WI?

I’ve read he was 4.4 fast. 4.4 was pretty damn fast in 1978, folks are free to look it up and contest that.

After Klien effed him, JJ was never the same. He was fast in SD. 4.2 fast is very doubtful but fast enough to separate from DBs of that era, yes.
