durable, good YAC, breaks tackles, reliable in pass pro, the more they gave him the ball the more productive he was, can push the pile, shoulder injury, can work between the tackles, avg pass catcher and like most, can be coached up in protection technique, may need to mature a wee bit before ready for prime time, 'nother candidate for our round three/comp pick, level of comp needs to be considered, def worthy of most anyone's watchlist, possible good alternative if Fletcher is overdrafted/comes off the board early

Todd McShay and his partner Steve Muench have been going over the quarterbacks on their NETFLIX podcasts. McShay has Sam Leavitt, a quarterback I failed to mention in previous posts, above Arch Manning right now. McShay has Dante Moore first, LaNorris Sellers second, and Leavitt third. He has C.J. Carr and Arch tied for fourth. They have also discussed Julian Sayin, Brendan Sorsby, Darian Mensah, Trinidad Chambliss, and John Mateer.

McShay has gone as far to say this very well may be the best quarterback class in NFL Draft history. That's quite a statement, after 1983 (John Elway, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino), 2004 (Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger), 2018 (Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson), and 2024 (Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Bo Nix). Yes, I know, it is quite early to be complimenting the 2024 class, but it looks like it is going to be a very good one.

We have to keep in mind that a few quarterback classes that were projected to be great turned out to be flops. The 1999 quarterback class had Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith, Daunte Culpepper, and Cade McNown go in the first round, all in the top 12. McNabb and Culpepper were the only ones worth those picks, and even Culpepper wasn't that good for long. Admittedly, I was very high on Cade McNown.

The 2011 quarterback class had Cam Newton, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, and Christian Ponder go in the first round, all in the top 12. Newton was the only one who wasn't a complete bust. I honestly don't know what the teams were thinking in taking Locker, Gabbert, and Ponder in the first round. I watched a lot of Locker and Ponder in college, and thought they both sucked.

In 2021, the quarterback class had Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields and Mac Jones go in the first round, all in the top 15. Lawrence has been the only one to look like anything remotely close to a franchise quarterback. I liked only Lawrence in that class.

I already mentioned some of the quarterbacks I like and don't like heading into this college season. I forgot about Sam Leavitt and John Mateer. I haven't seen Leavitt at all, so I will look out for him this fall. I liked what I saw out of Mateer before he got injured last season. While I think it's pretty bold of McShay to say that this could be a better quarterback class than 1983 and 2004, I do think there's a possibility that we might see the most quarterbacks taken in the first round in NFL Draft history next April. I'm all for that, because it will push what will probably be very good players at other positions down the board to us.

Haven't watched a lot of Stone or Echoles. I like what I've seen from Washington. Would love to find a way to get one of the three. It would be nice to see Washington reunite with Caldwell.

on offense:

Strike out: QB, rb, wideout, tight end, OT, center .... OG? Njoku's replacement?

on defense:

strike out: DT, safety, inside linebacker, ... edge?, cb?

I would guess CB/OG/Edge .... a #1 cb being at the top. Maybe Mack gives it one more year or Kennard comes on.
A total DT stud late in round 1 ... sure, who couldn't use one, but probably not happening

I remember everyone boasting about the group after Patrick Mahomes (& ignoring Mahomes): Rosen, Mayfield, Donald. You never know.

It would be interesting if the Ram QB develops for them. Any other franchise and I would consider it a BIP.

I don't normally start thinking about the draft until mid-season. By then, you know what is working/not working on your current roster... and your needs. That's also the same time that recent season's film starts dropping on most of the prospects... possible BPA's.

I haven't seen film on a majority of these prospects. I did watch A'Mauri Washington's film... before he decided to go back to school. He should definitely be in our first round cluster next draft. We'll have to wait-n-see about Mack's desire to return... a first round pass rusher should always be a consideration. The Chargers exercised QJ's 5th year option... might have bought a little time there.

Beach started it on the "Draft Thread"... probably why you missed it.
I glanced at it a couple times... but usually don't get my draft juices flowing until mid-season.
Super cool of Beach to get the early start... get the names out there... a little food for thought in the early season.

Not a fan of LaNorris Sellers, but so many seem to be high on him. Don't like Arch, and it has nothing to do with him being Eli's nephew. Wasn't impressed when I watched him last season. Don't like Dante Moore. Don't like Julian Sayin.

I do like Trinidad Chambliss, Jayden Maiava, and Austin Simmons (formerly of Ole Miss but lost his job to Chambliss; now at Missouri). None of them are projected to go in the first round right now. Maybe we can get one of them in the third round to be Herbert's backup. What do you think of that, beach?

I have to see more of C.J. Carr. A lot of so-called experts are raving about him right now. I've never watched Sorsby and won't be able to this fall.

All of the guys expected to go in the top ten of next year's draft I don't like. I like the guys who are expected to go later. Does that make me a genius or an idiot? I don't know. I guess we'll see.

Last year was last year. Guy get another year of growth so tho this is way too early for me, guys like Saying ....isnt he only a Sophomore? If so, he has a lot of growth ahead of him still. Even Arch can step it up next season as i agree, he wasnt all that last season. I'm not sure he's even backup material. He may be UFL material. Then again, maybe he'll show something with McDaniel this preseason.
