Watching OG2 and Matlock in unbalanced/overload 12...trying to be successful with combos....was a hilarious site in this game. Just be so much more effective with Kolar and Njoku. So many players were not good fits in what we were calling.

OG2 has no business trying to clear out an end and then move onto a LB. He isnt built for that.

The guard thing it is something pundits have been saying for years about the wide zone (Shanahan) offense.

I agree that our coaches and front office have never said that they don't want good guards. I think it is that wide zone coaches have different priorities from what "others" do. In particular PFF, but also gap and inside zone running teams.

Some offenses (Gap and inside zone) need guys who can move defenders, push them around. Gap runs the OL either traps, or pulls and leads, but at some point needs to drive the defender back. Inside zone, you fire off and try to drive the defender back, leaving a crease vertically, so the RB can run north/south.

Outside zone gets defenders to start moving outside, then blocker just has to keep his feet (ass) between the defender and the ball carrier. At some point a defender will try to break free, and then the blocker has to take him where he wants to go, which opens up lanes.

It is hard for some guys to run with the defenders. Could you imagine Boseman or Becton trying to run with a LB and DE on the way to the sidelines? I can't either. But I routinely saw Strange stay along or ahead of Achane last year in Miami, not just tot he edge, but leading upfeild as well. It's just that a zone guy like Strange isn't going to drive the guy back as much as just occupy them, force them to run around the blocker, leaving and even bigger cutback lane. I

Strange is not a good enough pass blocker to stop a good 3 technique DT cold on every play. Strange does a good job of taking away his primary gap, and force the defender/DL to rush through his secondary gap, running around him, and keeping the QB from being hit, so long as the QB throws it reasonably on time and doesn't just hold it.

Strange moves well in that vid in the ground game and does a pretty decent job of boxing the defender away from the ballcarrier...

No linebacker was ever good enough for Staley's schemes: Tranquil left for a 1 year contract, Kizer left for a 1 year contract, and Henley just couldn't see the field.

They had a super old, super experienced linebacker that they brought in at the end .... Erik Kendricks.
I always got the impression that the linebackers didn't know what the hell Staley wanted (didn't Staley fire a linebacker coach who argued with him?),
so Staley went with a guy who thought he had seen everything, and probably left just as confused.

Staley yelled at him for the player doing something he didn't like and the LB coach told him it was his shit playcall that was the problem lol.

Very helpful video. McDaniel asks a lot of his guards. Often they have to make enough initial contact at the first level to allow the player next to him (center) to get into position to seal... then they work up to the second level. Kind of puts the "McDaniel doesn't need good guards" idea to bed.

Quick first step is essential. Lots of tandem work and passing defenders off. Running laterally while maintaining contact. Getting a body in between the defender and the RB... creating lanes.

This is why McDaniel expects 2 years before the scheme begins to work. Hopefully athletic/smart players accelerate this transition. The RB's will have to recognize what is happening in front of them... and be patient... explode through the crease.

It's no wonder why the first 2 preseason games have been difficult. Now that the OL competition is complete... dudes will need lots of reps to get this timing down.

Justin Herbert made his second straight appearance in the preseason on Thursday night.

But the Chargers quarterback only saw the field for a trio plays as the unit went three-and-out to open the game.

3.Defensive starters get early work
The Bolts starters faced three different third downs on San Francisco's opening offensive drive and allowed the 49ers to convert each time.

We shouldn't be worried how the recent game will look as the regularregular-season approaches. Team will be alright.

Defensive starters didn't include top players like Mack and DJ. Others only played a few snaps. That was not our starting D.
