    22. Los Angeles Chargers

    Last Week's Ranking: 21

The Los Angeles Chargers faced tough circumstances for a season opener. They were on the road in a hostile environment, and they struggled to move the ball for much of the game against the Denver Broncos defense.

Getting into a rhythm was an issue, even though the Chargers were able to string together some explosive offensive plays late in the game.

The L.A. defense showed a lot of fight, especially when trying to come back in the fourth quarter. The game appeared virtually over when the team was down 24-7 and failed on 4th-and-short. However, the defense took over from there, forced turnovers, produced sacks and brought the Chargers back within striking distance.

The pass-rushing combination of Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram is going to intimidate a lot of quarterbacks this season.

Ultimately, costly mistakes doomed the Chargers. Philip Rivers threw a pick to open the second half that significantly altered the game. Casey Hayward dropped a would-be pick-six. Bosa jumped offsides, giving the Broncos a free play on the team's first touchdown. Poor clock management and no sense of urgency on L.A.'s final drive put the game into the hands of a rookie kicker on a 44-yard attempt. The end result was a three-point loss.

The Chargers weren't the more physical team through most of the game, but they didn't allow themselves to be pushed out of the contest either. If this team can learn to jell and stop committing self-inflicted wounds, it could be dangerous.

      15. Los Angeles Chargers (0-1, LW: 18)
Tough loss to the Broncos, but Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa are going to make life very tough on opposing quarterbacks this season.

Out of all the Week 1 teams, the Chargers were the greatest disappointment. To get blown out in Denver (prior to the fluky near-comeback) was inexplicable. Matvei said it best:

"Every time I bet on this team, I feel like some country realtor deciding that it's finally safe to reopen Camp Crystal Lake."

Objects in preseason are larger than they appear. Make that obstacles. The Chargers' offensive line, initially thought to be a massive area of concern (especially after Forrest Lamp went down), purportedly morphed into merely a minor issue as Los Angeles' offense moved the football in games that didn't count. Then the Broncos happened. Bolts fans (and Twitter) will point to the play calling in Monday night's loss. No argument there. But actually trying to block on the field goal might have been wise, too. Resilient showing by the defense, though, especially on the late Melvin Ingram sack to knock Denver out of easy field goal range. Ingram/Bosa sandwiches will be commonplace this season.

They showed some fight coming back against Denver, which you expect from a team with Philip Rivers. They get home this week to play the Dolphins, who have yet to play a game.

Mike Florio, PFT: 22. Chargers (0-1): New city, same position in the AFC West standings.

        Vinnie Iyer, Sporting News

23 (Down 6) It was a rough start for Joey Bosa and the defense, and not so great for Philip Rivers in the offense until it was too late. New coach Anthony Lynn wil try to get his first win in their new (temporary) home.
This week: vs. Dolphins, a strange opener for both, Sunday.

USA TODAY 17 (Down 4) They showed a lot of grit in Monday's 4th-quarterback comeback. They also suffered the type of lapses that swung the outcome in Denver's favor.

          --

ESPN: 22 (Down 2): After losing a league-high eight games by seven or fewer points last season, the Chargers opened their 2017 season with a three-point loss Monday. Possible overreaction: Get ready for more heartache, Chargers fans. The city might have changed, but the inability to come back or pull away hasn't.

          --

Redditt: 21 (Up 4): There are so many different things to say about the Chargers's Monday night showing. Here is a condensed version: Bosa and Ingram are scary. Chargers completely forget and then totally remember to football. Allen is innocent - No Fun League. Some of the refs' calls helped big time, but not as many as Denver fans claim. Lastly, rookie kickers hate ice. Well, at least the first home game will draw...intrigue? Sure, let's go with that.

Merely the first step in our journey from worst to worst.

Maybe we can just direct snap to Gordon next week and completely take Rivers out of the game.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Summary updated. If you are a Football Outsiders DVOA follower, the Rams were the most dominant team of the weekend.
