His suspension had something to do with it. Brady restructured as well for his deflategate suspension. He pushed his earnings out to the the next year, and saves his job, for now.
Wasn't it reported somewhere that the money he would lose during his suspension didn't count against the cap anyway so we'd get like $2 million towards the cap?
Verrett's contract is a 5th-year option, so it's guaranteed. There is nothing we can do about it now. But it's his last year as a Charger unless he can stay healthy, and even then he has to take a big pay cut to stay next season. Might make it back with incentives, but probably not.
Liuget is not a horrible player. I would not call him bad. But he is not very productive and as good as we hope the D is becoming, we need more production from the DT spots. Taking a pay cut gives us a chance to add a moderately high draft pick (potentially), and Liuget has time to be part of a rapidly improving D that has a chance to go deep in the playoffs.
Nope. It's fully guaranteed for injury once they make the decision (last offseason). The contract becomes fully guaranteed on the first day of the league year (march whatever it was).
We were stuck with him when he got hurt last year. We can cut him, but we still owe him the money. We might as well see if the training routine that Lynn brought in that fixed so many of the walking wounded we had in past years will work it's wonders on Verrett. I know that is a huge longshot, but we we don't save anything and we aren't going to find another player who is anywhere near as good as he is, china doll that he is.
It's just about time for teams to decide whether they'll be picking up the fifth-year options on 2013 first-round picks (if they haven't already). Whose options are getting exercised, and whose aren't?
I guess Liuget isn't going anywhere. That is a pretty reasonable paycut.
I was thinking initally if his cut was only a mill or so, that he was still in danger of being cut in TC. Guys with big cap numbers and low production are often TC casualties. Not us as much as other teams. But there is not a lot to be gained by cutting him at this point. The pro-rated bonus money is still against the cap if he plays for us or not. And at just $985K you aren't going to get that much cheaper unless you go the undrafted FA route.
