The most likely scenario is a 3rd/4th round draft pick if one proves too good to pass up.

Don't think I've ever once said he should be cut right now. The only guys the front office had to make decisions on were the guys with roster bonuses and contracts that become guaranteed at a certain date. The only reason to cut him, I believe is if we sign someone else that puts us over the cap and I think that date is June 1st when you have to be under the cap. Best case scenario is that he just takes a pay cut.

I wasn't suggesting that. Just the general rational is that cutting a guy to free up cap space implies signing someone to take his place, although as we can all see, there are not many FA options left.
I think someone else pointed out, it is poor form to get a guy to take a pay cut, then come along later and then cut the guy later. Maybe the plan is to try and upgrade the OG/C area, and maybe cut him later. I also seem to recall back in the early days of FA, a team negotiated a reduction of salary with a player, but didn't implement it until they finally got the guy they wanted. The idea being that they weren't going to ask a guy to take a pay cut unless it was necessary. But knowing a player is willing to make a salary reduction to help the team allowed the team to go after additional help.

Free agency grades
March, 25, 2014 Mar 2511:55AM ETBy Eric D. Williams | ESPN.com Recommend23 Tweet8 Comments9Email Print Good morning. In this ESPN Insider piece , ESPN NFL Insiders Bill Polian, Louis Riddick, Matt Williamson, Field Yates and Mike Sando grade the free-agent class of all 32 teams after the first two weeks of free agency.
So how did the San Diego Chargers do? The Insiders' panel gives the Chargers a C grade for the team's effort in free agency. Polian, who worked with Chargers general manager Tom Telesco in Indianapolis and drafted Donald Brown, liked the signing of the Indianapolis Colts' running back.
Along with Brown, San Diego signed linebacker Kavell Conner, quarterback Kellen Clemens, tight end David Johnson and cornerback Brandon Ghee.
The Chargers also retained their own free agents in re-signing linebacker Donald Butler, safety Darrell Stuckey, offensive lineman Chad Rinehart, cornerback Richard Marshall, linebacker Reggie Walker and receiver Seyi Ajirotutu.
Polian said it's tough to appreciate San Diego's free-agent signings if you focus on the big names. However, Polian was in the minority, as the panel felt indifferent at best with how the Chargers have performed so far in free agency.
“I'm not a big fan of Brown,” Riddick said. “Ghee has big upside but cannot stay healthy. They signed a couple really good special-teamers. What Tom Telesco is going to do will be very much like Bill [Polian]: pay a couple guys, make it very specific to your quarterback, pay a corner, pay your pass-rushers and more than likely, they are going to come through the draft. I don't think they feel a rush even though Philip Rivers is not a spring chicken.”Go Rivers!

...
I'm not terribly worried if this crowd didn't like some of our moves.
