Feeling pretty good about McCoy and the new staff

I was happy when McCoy was hired. I really thought the body of work he had in Denver, his youth, his demeanor would be a good change for the Chargers. At every step of the way, from reading about his interviews, to seeing his press conferences, to his hires for his staff, to the feedback from the players and how he is running the off season, I am even more convinced this was the right hire. He may not have immediate success, but I think the Chargers finally (for the first time since Bobby Ross) have a bona-fide, competent, winning head coach in charge. And he is not a retread or the best choice of a bunch of crummy options. For the first time in many years, I actually like the HC as opposed to convincing myself that I can support him because it is my favorite team.

    I'm with you.

I really like everything I'm hearing coming out of camp. Of course it is the "honeymoon" period, and we're not going to hear anything negative.

We'll see how things go... but I like him.
"...of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

Yeah, they have to build things up. PR. But even negative nelly Acee has had good things to say about the methods and morale he has seen. And I think he would be pretty quick to write an 'edgy' piece about how some players are not sold on the new way of doing things. Remember when Marty came in with his regimented way of doing things? The players started to revolt and Seau put them in their places and led by example. That does not appear to be happening and I think it is a real good sign because (a) McCoy has zero track record as a HC, unlike Marty who deserved the benefit of the doubt and still had issues and (b) McCoy sounds like details-control freak kind of guy and (c) players probably got real comfy and got away with a lot under Norv and that is over now yet we see all this buy in.

I like the fact that he is not trying to be the OC, but a full-time head coach. He clearly sees the job as a promotion and not an OC job with more added duties. I think this will lead to better game management too. I hope so.

Totally agree. While he hasn't coached a single game yet, it sure looks like he has the makings of a very good coach.

Pretty much agree with everything you said. My impression of McCoy is that he has good leadership skills; is an effective communicator; has a well thought-out plan; has a solid fundamental understanding of the X's and O's; is extremely disciplined (as evidenced by his no nonsense interviews); and is likeable as well.

                So far, so good.

You all make good points, but IMO the biggest difference we will see is the pacing of the offense. No more snail pace. I love that the practices are trying to imitate game speed as well. Most of the times I went to see them it was like they were all in slow mo. No urgency, which was seemingly replicated in games as well.

We may actually have a chance now if we have to score with less than 2 minutes on the clock.

Yeah Norv's training camps seemed like a country club atmosphere. Just remember reading so much about how they got to skip practices and stuff like that. No wonder the players wanted to keep him around so badly.

I'm also looking for more adaptability from this coaching regime. No more stubbornly sticking with the square peg for a round hole.
