Wasn't that impressed with him at the time, but boy he stands taller now in comparison to those who followed him.
Classy guy who was humble and did the right thing as he saw it, didn't agree with all of his decisions but there was NO DOUBT in my mind that he was doing what he thought was right and not self-serving or for the benefit of any particular group or partisan reasons.
Example of his class, when Reagan was shot and he had to return to the Whitehouse, he refused to go by helicopter and land on the south lawn because "Only the President lands on the south lawn of the Whitehouse." meanwhile lessor men are responding to reporters questions about "Who is in charge?" by spouting off "I'm in charge".
And he didn't gloat or take credit when the Berlin wall came down ... he was silent and gave the credit to the German people ... would ANY of today's politicians do that, regardless of party?
