Why would he accept a TWO year non guaranteed deal? I'd think any player would accept a one year deal and bet on himself.

Does he have the same speed after two ACL surgeries, one in each knee? Actually two on one knee, one on the other. Then there is his often injured shoulders. He is a medical wreck and don't see him holding up. Has he ever made it they a whole college season? I'm not sure.

If JV is on the roster, he is going to need a bunch of practice time to kick off the rust, time that will come at the expense of younger players who actually have a future.

We already have a deep CB group. Trevor Williams, Hayward, Davis, King, Facyson, Mager didn't look awful last year in TC. He is not going to suit up most Sundays. If JV would add anything to the Chargers it is just bench depth. Backups HAVE to play on ST. Can you see JV playing on kick coverage? Can he be a gunner on punts?

IF he is back to his old form, AND IF he can stay healthy AND IF we can find a way to activate him on Sundays..... what would he do? We play mostly zone defense? You don't need a guy like JV to play zone CB.

I just don't see how he fits. Plenty of other teams need CB help and would be willing to do the 1-year thing with him. He will be in the NFL this season (almost certainly). Some team will gamble on him. JV staying healthy would be like drawing a royal flush on the opening deal of a hand. It could happen, but the odds are against it. We will probably be cutting good players as it is because of the roster being loaded in some areas. And since JV would have zero trade value because of injuries, I see more of a harm than help situation.

I'd rather have Verrett than Mager.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Well if he isn't worth a one year , prove you can stay healthy deal, he sure isn't worth a two year deal. No player would accept a two year non guarantteed deal unless they are PS bubble material.
No doubt another team will make him a better offer but if he wants to stay here, I think he would sign a one year deal and show he can stay healthy and get a better deal if he does stay healthy. I just don't think think he will and I'm not worried about letting him walk. We have pretty much got nothing from him.

I'm not sure I want either one of them, just saying that of the two, Mager has a better chance of playing for us. I still think between UFA and late round picks, and maybe Jaylen Watkins (who is not a bad CB himself), both would have a hard time making the roster.

Mager was cut and we can move on from him being a conversation piece. The only way Verrett is on the roster it would be a 1-year deal veteran minimum with all incentive based bonus which he probably will not reach like play 16 games, get 5 INT, I doubt he would achieve any of them he has never played a full season and for his career he has 5 INT's

Smart gamble if the contract is correct.

1-2 year non-guaranteed incentive laiden deal.
If healthy, and still the athlete he was before, he would be a dynamic matchup piece.
