  • Mighty 1090 Taken Off Air

A popular San Diego sports radio station was taken off the air Wednesday, several hosts announced on the website for Mighty 1090.

"It's a really, really crappy, crappy position to be in," said radio sports station host Darren Smith on Wednesday.

Smith relayed to listeners how he and his co-host Marty Caswell learned about the news that the radio station was taken off the air at 11:30 a.m.

The hosts were preparing for their noon show, when Broadcast Company of the Americas (BCA) President Mike Glickenhaus approached them with a somber look on his face. He said they needed to have a meeting with everyone in the building, according to Smith.

"We have been taken off the air by the people who own our tower," Smith recalled hearing the station president say.

He didn't go into details as to what led up to Wednesday's events.

"We had been aware this had been a possibility," he said because it had happened to two of their sister stations.

Smith said there were people in tears around the radio station, adding, "It's heartbreaking."

BCA was founded in San Diego in 2003 and offers play-by-play coverage of the San Diego Gulls hockey team.

If I recall, their two sister stations where taken off the air in December. It was rumored that they fell behind in their rent for the tower which is in the $100k per month range.

Too bad, Smith did good interviews, especially with Daniel Jeremiah and Will Brinson.

Another ripple effect from the relocation
somewhere tony hawk is still celebrating

I listened often before and a little after the relocation
      smith was okay
      I liked billy ray
kaplan was almost as amusing as he was annoying
I know linda is battling cancer and I hope she pulls through but as an on air personality I was never a fan.

As a non-local, wondering what you mean by the Tony Hawk comment? Did they steal his skateboard or something? Just wondering what the relationship is there...

I disliked Kaplan greatly so I'm happy that he's off the air. Though I do fear bad for everyone else. Sadly, I missed AM 1700 more than 1090.

I'm more hurt than I thought I'd be

Relocation aftershocks triggering PTSD-like symptoms (not to minimize REAL PTSD)

                but triggered no less.

I stopped listening a number of weeks ago, mostly as there was more interesting talk elsewhere, but this is all due to not being able to pay for airtime, but also no major league team games hurt recently. We'll see what happens but they can't money just talking about soccer and non home teams. This is a move more by the owner of the tower.. he wants more for his 50K blowtorch.

The only listenable show for me was the Darren Smith show. I was lucky enough to go to the Tony Gwynn HOF induction on 1090's dime, and Darren
and Philly Billy were the leaders of the group. He had a haircut made for radio back then. He's professional, and his team will find jobs elsewhere, if they do disband the station. Really don't care about Kaplan, he'll back on his feet as well.

Only when i travel near SD or going across Barstow to the I 5 can i hear the 1090 so its not often so i wont miss it. Screw Kaplan though. When you lose your professional franchise these things happen. I wonder if the City of SD is feeling the remnents from letrting the Chargers go? The Q pretty much sits.
