going forward, behind perryman, does lac prefer an attacking pass blitz thumper mlb or more of a 3-4 wilb with coverage skills?
please refrain from saying a little of both
I would assume that they want someone who can play all three downs but also be the leader of that defense. The guy who basically wears the green dot. He needs to have coverage skills but also be stout against the run. Perryman fills the role of the defense leader well, though he's not that great in coverage to put it mildly. That's why having someone like Davis and White/Brown next to him will help a lot.
Reading that thing about what Belichick had to say a little while back (that I think Fleet posted), I'm ok with having fairly interchangeable guys who won't get trapped on the field and exploited in mismatches, even if that means they are less of a leader/playmaker. If we have solid DTs, we could survive having even drag-down Donnie types back there instead of some run-stuffing statue... basically on anything except obvious run situations.
So yeah, put me in the wanting Coverage Skills category.

Jamie Collins pls,
RT Taliese Fuaga, DT Jer'Zhan Newton, NT T'Vondre Sweat, LB Cedric Gray, TE Ben Sinnott, RB Daijun Edwards, FS Cole Bishop, QB Joe Milton
Team D stops both run & pass. Addae was as much as a liability as any player we had.
While I agree that we must improve the talent level on the IDL, an old school typical DT isn't necessarily the answer. A limited lateral mobility, oversized, prospect that relies almost solely on his brute strength/power to win vs college olinemen is going to struggle and get single blocked by traps/angles/stretch/fold blocks in the NFL.
Several quality coverage LBs in this draft class. I don't have Edwards as a top 100 prospect.
I see Edwards as a two down mlb. But a quality backup every team would like to have. 5th rounder or maybe 4th since its a bad year for lb talent in the draft.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
The Wasted Decade is done.

Well which is it? A coverage backer, or TJ Edwards? Maybe he covered ok in college, but I don't think he is athletic enough to be anything but a 2 down thumper in the NFL...if even that.
Germaine Pratt started out his college career as a Free Safety...(Brian Urlacher, anyone?) was asked to hit the gym, put on weight, and change position...which he did. Finished with 100+ tackles, 6 sacks, and double digit TFLs...so he can cover, tackle, and blitz...the only thing I can't speak to is whether he could/would be a leader on the field. I think being adaptable enough to switch and be successful at two positions in college speaks to commitment and maybe even football IQ...but not necessarily that he would be a vocal leader. But your MLB doesn't have to be the QB of the defense...whoever our WILL ends up beign(Kyzir?) could do the same...
Anyway, really like Pratt...curious how our staff feels about him, but I don't know that we even talked to him.
