1st round picks are a little like the draft day thing. Everyone has something with them. Something that might be an issue. Some of them are a big deal, some of them are nothing. You just have to decide if you can live with what they have. Clowney is the best of the players that are on that list, but you have to remember he still thinks he is an elite, special player, and he is only an above average pass rusher, who is a pretty good run defender. He is a disappointment in terms of his production vs his draft stock. So are the rest of them, even Fischer.

Newton is still a decent QB. We would have to scheme around his strengths. The thing is, Taylor is probably a better QB than Newton is at this point. Newton will make more big plays than Taylor, but he will also make more mistakes. And we would have to scheme around both players strengths and weaknesses. But many people are going to think Newton should be the starter if we sign him, and I don't think he is as good a player as Taylor is.

The problem with signing Newton is that if Taylor, no matter how well he plays, if he ever has a bad game, or the offense struggles in any way, then people will start calling for Newton to start over Tyrod. He has the experience and pedigree that there is an instant controversy in the press, and in the locker room if Tyrod has ANY issues. If we are going to make Tyrod the QB, then he needs to be able to just go out and play. If he plays bad in multiple games, then any QB should have to worry, but a game here or a game there, the QB shouldn't be looking over their shoulder.

Justin Fields is top QB, not Trevor Lawrence, say analysts

Trevor Lawrence is the quarterback many signal caller hungry teams have their eyes on. Unfortunately, he is not eligible for the 2020 NFL Draft, needing to play one more season at Clemson before entering the draft.

While Lawrence is widely regarded as the top signal caller in next year’s quarterback crop, not all analysts believe he is No. 1 overall. According to Pro Football Focus, Ohio State’s Justin Fields is their preferred quarterback in next year’s draft.

In fact, Fields should be talked about more but Lawrence has the pedigree due to appearing in the National Championship game twice, according to PFF.

“Justin Fields should be ahead of Trevor Lawrence,” PFF said. “He’s graded better, he’s graded better in pro like situations. He’s six-foot-three, it’s not like he’s some shrimpy guy that no one’s ever heard of. Justin Fieldsahead of Trevor Lawrence.

“They both project to be better than Tua (Tagovailoa) and a little bit less than (Joe) Burrow, but of course Burrow had the senior year that none of them have had yet. So for right now, it’s Fields then Lawrence and then, if Tua were in next year’s draft, he’d be third.”

Comparing them on the stat sheet, Fields has one year as a starter under his belt. Before transferring to Ohio State and starting in 2019, Fields originally enrolled at Georgia but could not beat out incumbent starter Jake Fromm, who entered the 2020 NFL Draft. Rather than sit behind Fromm for two seasons, Fields elected to transfer and found instant success at Ohio State.

Last year, Fields threw for 3,273 yards, 41 touchdowns, three interceptions and ran for 484 yards and 10 touchdowns. Lawrence threw for 3,665 yards, 36 touchdowns and eight interceptions while rushing for 563 yards and nine touchdowns. Lawrence is not considered a true dual threat quarterback but compiled fantastic rushing statistics as a quarterback.

Fields thrived in Ryan Day’s system with the Buckeyes, taking advantage of his running ability. A late season injury hampered his dual threat ability, but Fields showcased the arm talent that made him a coveted prospect in high school.

Pro Football Focus believes these two are above the crop of the 2020 NFL Draft class, with the exception of Burrow, who had a historic campaign in 2019 with LSU.

If Fields puts together another season like 2019, he could make teams rethink the quarterback pecking order. Some believe the system allowed Fields to thrive unlike the offensive scheme at Georgia, which was tailored to a strong running game and Fromm’s strengths.

However, Lawrence remained consistent, topping the yardage and touchdown totals from his freshman season (2018). He also won a National Championship and led Clemson to another last season.

The prospects met only once in college as Clemson took on Ohio State in the College Football Playoff Semi-Finals last season. Clemson won the game 29-23 as Fields threw a game ending interception in the end zone on a drive that could have won the game outright for the Buckeyes.

Chargers have fixed our OL with a pro bowl right side which will protect the lid side of a left handed QB like Tua....... that was done for a reason......

Taylor is nothing more than a game manger stop gap QB to play just until Tua is ready.....

Chargers only scored around 17-18 points per game last year with a future HOF QB playing...... we will struggle to get to that many points with Taylor at QB..........Taylor may not throw many interceptions but hew does not score very much either......

Anybody for trading down? Think about it. Trade down to later in the first to pick up somebody’s one for next year. Be in position to trade three #1s to get one of the two top QBs next year. And take one of the OTs later in the first. And see what you have on the roster at QB right now.

Plus this year may not happen. Its better to pay the signing bonus to pick 24 than to pick 6 if the season is cancelled.

I’d consider staying at 6 to see if either Tua or Simmons falls (assuming Burrow and Young are gone).

I liked Ben in that draft. Great arm, throws really well on the move, swatted blitzing DBs like flies as college QB.

What if? What if our HC really dos like Taylor as much as he seems to? In spite of it being liars month, what if TT is also very high on Tyrod? If so, considering that Tyrod is still a young QB, maybe they aren't as interested in adding a QB as we all think.

I know that thought is not popular (even with me), but if Taylor is really capable of being our QB in the system AL wants to use, it could actually be a catalyst for going back to the playoffs. If they don't use a high draft pick for a QB, they could actually draft three very good players in the first three rounds. In fact the first round pick could be a all Pro kind of player. (think Simmons)
