While we did lose quite a few players and suffered quite a few injuries, missing on every first rounder from 2007-2010 is what dug our grave IMO. Not to mention some of those drafts were just complete black holes. Let's start with our 2007 draft.

    1 30 Craig "Buster" Davis WR 6 ft 1 in (1.88 m) 207 lbs (94 kg) Louisiana State
    2 37 Eric Weddle FS 5 ft 11 in (1.83 m) 200 lb (91 kg) Utah
    3 96 Anthony Waters OLB 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) 245 lb (111 kg) Clemson
    4 129 Scott Chandler TE 6 ft 7 in (2.04 m) 257 lb (116 kg) Iowa
    5 172 Legedu Naanee WR 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) 225 lb (102 kg) Boise State
    7 240 Brandon Siler LB 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) 238 lb (107 kg) Florida

Buster Davis. Nothing really needs to be said. His name says it all. Weddle is the only player left from this draft and really the only player that AJ traded up for that he hit on.

1 27 (27) Player Video Antoine Cason CB Arizona
3 6 (69) Player Video Jacob Hester FB LSU
    5* 31 (166) Marcus Thomas RB UTEP
6 26 (192) Player Video DeJuan Tribble CB Boston College
    7 27 (234) Corey Clark G Texas A&M

This was a complete bust of a draft. Not a single impact player. All players gone.

Moving on to the 2009 draft

    1 16 Larry English DE/OLB 6 ft 3 in 255 lb Northern Illinois
3 78 Louis Vasquez Guard 6 ft 7 in 354 lb Texas Tech
4 113 Vaughn Martin Defensive tackle 6 ft 3 in 331 lb Western Ontario
    4 133 Tyronne Green Guard 6 ft 2 in 307 lb Auburn
4 134 Gartrell Johnson Runningback 6 ft 225 lb Colorado State
5 148 Brandon Hughes Cornerback 5 ft 10 in 182 lb Oregon State
    6 189 Kevin Ellison Safety 6 ft 1 in 220 lb USC
7 224 Demetrius Byrd Wide receiver 6 ft 2 in 195 lb LSU

Larry English is the only player that remains and he hasn't had any impact on the team thus far. Vasquez left during FA, and last season was really the only year he put it together grading positively in pass blocking. Every other player has since departed and made no positive impact.

    Moving on to 2010

Draft order Player name Position Height Weight College Notes
    Round Choice Overall
1 12 12 Ryan Mathews RB 6'0" 218 lbs. Fresno State Traded up with Miami Dolphins, (28).
2 8 40 Traded to the Miami Dolphins
    3 15 79 Donald Butler LB 6'1" 245 lbs. Washington Traded up with San Francisco 49ers, (91).
4 12 110 Darrell Stuckey FS 5'11" 205 lbs. Kansas Traded up with Miami Dolphins, (126).
5 15 146 Cam Thomas DT 6'4" 330 lbs. North Carolina Traded up with Philadelphia Eagles, (159).
    5 37 168 Jonathan Crompton QB 6'3" 222 lbs. Tennessee Compensatory Selection.
6 28 197 Traded to the Houston Texans
    7 28 235 Dedrick Epps TE 6'3" 250 lbs. Miami

Matthews, while he's had 1 decent year, pretty much hasn't been worth the picks we gave up to draft him and he has been more trouble than he's worth. Butler was lost his rookie year, but has developed nicely and is really the only productive player from this draft so far. Stuckey has battled injuries his entire career and hasn't developed into the SS we hoped he would be. Cam Thomas is also full of unrealized potential. There's still hope for this draft, but it hasn't been realized.

Take a good look at all those failed drafts. That's a miserable 4 year stretch where the grand majority of picks were complete failures. I don't know if any coach could have succeeded if he's not getting a steady influx of talent, not to mention departures of probowl players year after year. This doesn't absolve Norv from blame, it was a full team effort.

Good analysis, Beerman. It's also worth noting that personnel-wise we were in "we've arrived" mentality...drafting and FA market-ing for perceived "need" instead of team building.

This is the approach that veered us off course. Spanos has a lot to answer for as well.

totally disagree and you are taking things out of context to fit an agenda. this was team that drafted at the end of rounds every year and had a set roster of starters and a HC who was not interested in developing young players outside his specialty area and wouldn't play younger players at all if he could help it. You don't draft for "impact players" with the idea you are going to keep replacing/upgrading starters every year under those conditions. You draft for depth, the future and take chances on guys like Waters and Ellison- both of whom were cut for personal reasons- NOT because they couldn't play. Its unfair to count guys we no longer have as part of some "failed draft" story line.

I don't actually consider guys like Vasquez or Martin to be failures (especially not Vasquez who was highly valued by Denver). Stuckey has been outstanding on ST. Hester was better than what we got rid of him for last year (though not worth the trade up). Siler was a nice selection in the 7th. Chandler has put up some decent numbers the last couple of seasons (much, much better than John Phillips). We will see if we actually got better at CB and LG (though Rinehart won't be playing next to the worst LT in the league this year like Green had to last year). This is English's make or break year. Last year we were deepest at the OLB position and this year we have no depth there whatsoever.

If anyone cares, getting back to where this thread started, here is the latest about Norv's offense from the Cleveland media. ... the Browns had their fan fest (much like the Chargers did) last night. The offense looked real bad. Terrible. Weeden threw interceptions and has been throwing a ton of them in practice. He seems unable to make his reads. The receivers are confused. This is early, but this is also against a defense they practice against every day. The Browns have one of the better OLs in the NFL (my opinion) and they have a strong running game (Trent Richardson). But Norv appears to be Norving it up at this point.

For those of you tired of hearing about Norv, my apologies.

Cleveland fans should have fun watching their running game and offensive line erode over the next few years. I know Browns fans will be chill, unlike us angry villagers.

...the only report about Turner I care(d) about was that he'd been fired as Chargers coach, along with puppetteer A.J.Smith.

This thread reminds me of an old Soviet Union joke. God came down to a Russian farmer and told him "I will give you one thing, anything you ask, but whatever I give you I will give your neighbor double." The farmer thought about it for a quick second and said, "In that case, poke one of my eyes out."
