    Welcome William Middleton

William Middleton spent his first four NFL seasons with Derek Cox.

On Sunday, he followed him to San Diego.

The Chargers signed the veteran to a one-year deal, adding much-needed veteran depth to their secondary. Middleton and Cox are both cornerbacks who entered the league in 2009, Cox the Jaguars' third-round pick and Middleton the Falcons' fifth.

A strong special teamer, Middleton started 12 of 49 career games in Jacksonville, including three games in 2012. He ended last season on injured reserve with a minor-grade concussion but is expected to be on the field for the Chargers Sunday wearing No. 42.

It's the team's fourth practice of training camp and second in pads.

For Middleton, it's his 27th birthday.

The Jaguars experimented with him at free safety in 2012, so he offers some versatility. He finished the year with 18 tackles and one pass defensed.

At cornerback, Cox signed a four-year deal in March. He and Shareece Wright are the entrenched starters while Johnny Patrick is working heavily in the slot. There are five rookie corners on the San Diego roster, four of which went undrafted.

The Chargers placed inside linebacker Jonas Mouton (torn ACL) on injured reserve Sunday in a corresponding move. He was waived-injured Saturday and went unclaimed.
