Does anybody else have a most memorable season opener or just great memories you have about one?
I am always ready for the opener like I am sure most people are. But I got to thinking about opening games I have seen in the past and there is one I remember more than most. Sept. 7 1981 against the Browns on Monday night. I think this game sticks out for a number of reasons. Growing up in Boise we always had Denver as a regional team and Seattle as the backup since they were still in the AFC West at that time. Long story short SD was rarely on TV. Only got to see the Chargers on TV if
1. There was a double header on and they were playing in a national game and neither Denver or Seattle were playing at the same time.
2. If they were playing Denver or Seattle and if they were playing the Seahawks at the same time Denver was playing it was a no go.
3. If they were in a Monday night game.
Since those were always the main two teams on TV around here there were tons of Broncos and Hawks fans and I took a lot of crap for being a Chargers fan. I loved football though so I would watch whatever games they had on television. That opening weekend my 7th grade self couldn't wait for Monday night as I knew I would be able to see Fouts & Co. play that week. Had a Chargers shirt I wore every week and heard a lot of trash from Denver fans on Monday when I went to school. Seemed like the day lasted forever and even when school got out had to wait until 7 P.M. for game time since it is the mountain time zone. I know I spent some time after school throwing the football outside with some friends as I totally ignored home work.
When game time finally got there I wasn't disappointed. The Chargers decimated the Browns with a 44-14 win! Had to love it Fouts threw for over 300, Muncie ran for 160 and Joiner ended up with nearly 200 yards. It was a great night for a much younger me. Even though I saw the game I was still excited to get up the next morning and read about it in the sports section of the paper.
What about anybody else? Any openers stick out in your mind for any reason?
