Free Agency: Why CB Aaron Colvin Might not be as Good as you Think

March 1, 2018 Niners Live 1530 Views 49ers, , NFL free agency, Robert Saleh, San Francisco 49ers
Recently, it was reported that the Jacksonville Jaguars were unlikely to re-sign cornerback Aaron Colvin. And the 49ers have a glaring need at cornerback, so this should be a match made in heaven right? Not so fast.

Recently, Niners Live discussed our top draft choices at cornerback and in free agencyre-signed by the Jaguars and why he might not be as good as you might think from an objective perspective, of course.
According to Overthecap.com$8 million) that was signed by offensive linemen Garry Gilliam.
      Carlos HydeMatt Maiocco).

In his four seasons; Colvin has appeared in 48 games, starting 25 of those contests while accounting for 166 combined tackles, 14 passes defended, one forced fumble (two fumble recoveries, returning one for a touchdown), zero interceptions in the regular season and one interception (see video) coming in three playoff appearances. Note: In 2016, the National Football League handed down a four-game suspension
What Colvin brings to the table

      s defensive 4-3 under/cover-3 scheme.
He also comes from one of the top defenses and secondaries in the league.
Why CB Aaron Colvin might not be as good as you think
21st against the run) with a PFF run grade of 41.7 (100th-ranked qualifying cornerback).
Note: In the last three years, Colvin was targeted 176 times, surrendering 124 catches at a catching rate of 70.5 percent, allowed 1,079 receiving yards, two touchdowns, and a passer rating of 90.1.

Important to note: In the 2017 playoff game, Jaguarsversus the New England Patriots; wide receiver Danny Amendola (seven catches for 84 yards on nine targets and two touchdowns) played exclusively out of the slot and at times matched up against Colvin.
The 49ers already have a nickel back in who was signed to a contract extension last season. It remains to be seen if Colvin can play on the outside at a high sustainable level.
Colvin was drafted by the Jaguars before fellow cornerbacks and teammates Jalen Ramsey (top-draft pick in 2016) and A.J. Bouye

Colvin sucks. He's worse than Facyson. Garbage with the Jags and garbage with the Texans. Go on Texans forums and you'll see them celebrating his release.

He basically cost them week 1 game cause Brees picked on him again and again and even on their last play to get into FG range.
Tom Telesco’s Results in 9 years as Chargers GM:

        - 69-74 record
        - 0 division titles in 9 yrs as GM
        - Worst record among all active GMs with same tenure
        - 6th worst winning percentage among all active GMs overall
        - 2 playoff wins despite elite QB all 9 yrs
        - Team still has the same weaknesses (Oline and run defense) that it had when hired as GM in 2013
        - Consistently puts together horrible depth, expects starters to never miss games

The Chargers don't have a DB on their practice squad.
I like Mike Jackson (Dallas' 5th rounder sitting on their practice squad)
although he's a rookie so not sure if any better than Facyson at the moment.

No need to panic just yet ... if there's a value guy thats not expensive sitting out there, i dont mind kicking tires but lets not get crazy.
give Justin Jones the predominance of snaps @NT, and.... play Jerry about twice as many snaps as he got last Sunday.

we also need a healthy DP.... (and to move Kyzir back to WIL when that time comes.... three to four deep there btw)

What is a DP? How does this solve only 3 healthy corners?

'nother move I would consider is to designate Jaylen Watkins as a CB/FS, and bring back Adarius Pickett as a SS, and....

am squarely a Facyson supporter and have been well before he got drafted.... his main concern is durability.... he will hold up just fine as long as he is healthy, and after he gets a coupla few weeks under his belt.

well it doesn't, and.... the chances are that Denzel (Perryman) doesn't make it for the duration of the season either.... unfortunately.

as for the CB situation.... would look into signing (another injury concern) EJ Gaines, designate Jaylen Watkins as a backup CB, and let it ride w/Facyson 'til a coupla few of our guys get healthy/back into the DB fold.
