Bolts vs. Lions Ugly Analysis Week 2

Defensive breakdowns, offensive breakdowns, turnovers, and some bad playcalling. This was losing ugly to the max. Roll the ugliness, defense first. Look at King (red) and White (yellow) as ball is snapped, just before that screen play for the Lions TD:

    image.png

They are both in position to protect against a ballcarrier or catch in the flats, right? But no. King shoots up inside and gets blocked out, and White gets faked out by Stafford's initial move to his left, before dumping off the screen to his right. And White stumbles and falls. And Johnson (blue) takes the ball with a WIDE OPEN FIELD ahead of him for the TD. You just cannot leave lanes like this wide open.

Rivers had some problems with accuracy today, especially in crunch time.
    Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Rivers sacked. Tevi allows his man to get inside, and so does Scott. You just can't allow that inside move, or pocket quickly collapses. If they keep their rushers to outside of pocket, Rivers had Benji for an easy quick completion in the flats.

Play calling and coaching had problems too.

Yep...Rivers went into "Meltdown Mode" which he has been able to avoid for the most part the past year or two...sad...he needs to play better in crunch time instead of playing "hero ball"...and slinging the rock into coverage for picks...or incompletions...

Another D breakdown. Davis (yellow) moves up and gets blocked out, while Phillips (red) gets blocked out and Johnson rumbles for a first down. I thought Davis was smart enough to either stay clean, or shed blocks, being a vet and all...guess not...

OC has long since over stayed his time with the Chargers. If we can see it, why can't the front office?

About what I expected from this game. I thought it would be close and I had it rated as a toss up. Too many injuries right now for the Chargers to overcome. No reason to panic or get disillusioned by the loss. The Chargers are not able to put their full team on the field. The team just has to reach the bye week no worse than .500. They manage that and they have a chance to finish very hot and roll into the playoffs as a Wild Card.

That said, something has to happen at WR. Without Tyrell and HH, there isn't a lot of depth of talent for Rivers to throw to. Not sure if MW was limited by injury today, but somebody has to step up and provide another consistent, reliable target. Rivers can't keep locking in on Keenan. Mike W., Travis B. Dontrelle Inman, Virgil Green.

There are always plays that can be questioned, but 2 red zone turn overs, 2 TDS called back by penalties, 2 missed fgs and 6 dropped passes kind of indicate the problem is execution rather than game plan or play calling.

C'mon everyone. We have a game 2 post game hangover. But the shit plays were Rivers checking out of Whis' calls. Whis was dazzling last week. Phil was not so dazzling today. It was either dropped passes, or Phil overthrowing KA vs Slay.

JJ's TD run called back on a "hold" by Inman. Looks like a small push...looks kind of ticky-tack to me...
