The Chargers found a way to lose. They had two touchdowns nullified by penalties on the same drive. Austin Ekeler fumbled at the goal line. And then Philip Rivers threw an inexcusable interception into heavy coverage with a little more than a minute to go. Why do the Chargers always have these awful self-inflicted losses?

The Chargers could be 2-0 right now if their backup kicker could make a field goal. Then again, they could also be 0-2 if Adam Vinatieri was able to make a field goal. Either way, it's truly remarkable how good Philip Rivers is playing despite having five human turnstiles in front of him. His offensive line is an abomination, yet Rivers is somehow keeping his team competitive.

A terrible loss for the Chargers. Two touchdowns called back by penalty, a goal-line fumble by Austin Ekeler, and Ty Long misses field-goal tries from 41 and 39 in an eventual 13-10 defeat to the Lions. Philip Rivers' pained expression on the sideline after the second Long miss said it all. Sand is running through the hour glass for the 37-year-old quarterback -- he doesn't have time for these special teams-related shenanigans anymore. Still, Rivers could have been better in this one. He took a bad delay-of-game penalty on the Chargers' last drive, then forced a ball into double coverage on third-and-19 that was intercepted in the end zone, with Los Angeles down just three and in field goal range (purportedly). It was an overly difficult throw, but perhaps Rivers wasn't going to put the game back in Long's hands. The Chargers have to regroup after losing a game you probably win nine out of 10 times. Those sting the most.

The offense can't afford fumbles like Austin Ekeler had against the Lions on the goal line. Do they miss Melvin Gordon?
    ----
    Mike Florio - PFT/NBC Sports 11 (LW 10)

They lost a regular-season game played outside of L.A. for the first time since December 16, 2017.

The Chargers are back to losing tough road games, and the Lions loss will sting for a while because Los Angeles blew it with self-inflicted mistakes. The run defense also will be a lingering concern without Derwin James to fill behind the linebackers.

      Matt Verderame - Fansided.com 13 (LW 6)

This ranking is partially injuries, and partially losing to the Lions due to mind-numbing errors. Brutal loss.

      USA Today 11 (LW 6)

Veteran LB Thomas Davis has been a nice pickup, taking early league lead for tackles. If only he could handle kicking duties in a pinch.

      ESPN 10 (LW 7)

Pleasant surprise: Running back Austin Ekeler has done a nice job filling the void left by Melvin Gordon's absence due to his contract dispute. Ekeler leads the league in total touchdowns with four, and his 287 yards from scrimmage is second in the NFL. However, Ekeler did have a costly fumble at the goal line in the 13-10 road loss to the Detroit Lions this past Sunday. Although Ekeler has performed well, he has never had more than 106 carries during a full season. At 5-foot-8 and 200 pounds, durability is a concern for the cat-quick running back. -- Eric D. You use a punter to do your placekicking and miss two field goals in a 13-10 loss. An alternate plan might have been advisable.

The Chargers and snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, somehow not as iconic a duo as the Chargers and injuries. By the way, both of those happened in this game against the Lions. They not only handed Detroit a win, but safety Adrian Phillips, in place of the already-injured Derwin James, broke his arm making a tackle. The defensive backfield is actually running out of players, and we've only played two games. The Chargers get to test the limits of that DB depth next week when they face DeAndre Hopkins and the Texans.

Sunday's loss to the Lions in Detroit was a very Chargers game. This is a franchise in the Philip Rivers era that has excelled in an area no one wants to excel in--losing games the team is supposed to win.

This was a Lions team that blew a big lead late in a tie with the Cardinals in Week 1. It was a game where the Chargers averaged 5.5 yards a carry, wide receiver Keenan Allen had his way with Detroit cornerback Darius Slay much of the afternoon, and the Lions managed just six points through three quarters.

Yet despite outgaining the Lions by a substantial amount and controlling the action most of the afternoon, the Chargers still found a way to lose. The offense squandered multiple opportunities. Los Angeles committed nine penalties for 70 yards. The defense faltered late. And Rivers sealed the Bolts' fate with a late interception that killed a potential game-tying drive.

It gets worse. Safety Adrian Phillips, who was himself filling in for the injured Derwin James, is out indefinitely after breaking his forearm in the loss.

"The Chargers are a good team," Davenport said. "But it seems like every year they come out flat and lose a game like this just to remind us all that they aren't a great one."

        Teddy Powers - Powers.com 8 (LW 8)

In back-to-back weeks, the Chargers have committed an ugly red zone turnover that doomed their chances of pointspread success. At Detroit, it cost them the straight up win as well.

PFF Power Rankings ELO 7 (LW 6)

In typical Chargers fashion, they lost a game they should have won last week in Detroit. They outgained the Lions 6.8 yards per play to 5.8 but missed two field goals. Philip Rivers also threw a fatal interception while in range to tie. The Chargers PFF ELO moves up in accordance with a narrow victory according to the the internal grades.

                  true, it makes no sense......

they way this season is going with all the QB injuries.... the Chargers might end up 9-7 and be the (distant) 3rd best team in AFC behind NE and KC who will compete to be undefeated.....

if Ramsey ends up a chief they may never lose a game even if they rest players the last game against this Chargers team......that has lost our ability to score......
