2019 Post Wk 5 Power Rankings and Ratings

Frank Schwab - Yahoo Sports 19 (LW 15)
Frank Schwab has been with Yahoo Sports since 2012. He is an alum of the University of Wisconsin and lives outside of Denver with his family.

I'm not sure there's another franchise in all of sports more endlessly frustrating than the Chargers. The Chargers had a moment of hope they could come back and beat an 0-4 Broncos team when they got an interception deep in Denver territory on Sunday. Then Philip Rivers immediately threw an interception into the end zone. That's the Chargers, in one sequence.

The Chargers stink. Their only cover this year has been against the Dolphins, which doesn't count. Their only win besides that occurred because Adam Vinatieri couldn't kick his way out of a paper bag. They've been blown out in two home games against teams with a combined record of 4-6.

The visiting 0-4 Denver Broncos should have been money in the bank for the Chargers on Sunday. Instead, the Bolts gave up the first 17 points of the game, blew a pair of goal-line scoring opportunities and fell short in their comeback attempt in a 20-13 loss. Disappointment was everywhere in this one, but let's focus on the backfield, where the return of holdout running back Melvin Gordon was supposed to bolster an attack that had thrived with Austin Ekeler leading the show. Gordon showed a ton of rust, held to 38 total yards from scrimmage and no first downs for the first time in his career. Ekeler had almost no role as a rusher, but he did have a whopping 15 receptions, nearly half of Philip Rivers' total completions for the game. The Chargers are a work in progress right now.

The injuries they've suffered are showing up on a weekly basis. They just don't have enough top players right now. Can he do it again?

The close games aren't going the Chargers' way this year, which means they may go the way of missing the postseason.

Vinnie Iyer - Sporting News 20 (LW 17)

Here we go again with the injury-riddled Chargers making critical mistakes in key moments. It seemed Anthony Lynn had quarantined them from their usual game-finishing struggles, but they are no longer immune, especially when they commit multiple red-zone turnovers.

    Matt Verderame - Fansided.com 20 (LW 14)
The Indianapolis Colts pulled off the league's best victory this weekend, while the Los Angele Rams have looked out of sync for a few week.

It might be time to wonder if the Chargers are even a playoff team.

They're below .500 at this point for fourth time in last five years. They didn't overcome any of those previous starts to reach playoffs.

Surprise fantasy player: Hunter Henry, TE

Expected to be one of the more productive tight ends in the NFL, Henry has just four catches for 60 yards. He suffered a tibia plateau fracture to his left knee in Week 1 against the Colts and was projected to miss four to six weeks, so a lack of production is mainly due to injury. Henry has been working with trainers on the field over the past week and appears close to returning to the field. Once healthy, Henry should be an impact player for the Chargers; the Bolts could use help from the athletic tight end to solve their issues scoring in the red zone. -- Eric D. Williams

New England was the overwhelming favorite for the No. 1 spot in our NFL power poll this week, while New Orleans, Green Bay and Kansas City were separated by a mere five points in the next three spots. Down at the bottom, Atlanta continues to slide, joining Miami, Washington and more of this season’s bottom-dwellers.

Melvin Gordon was predictably rusty in his return, and Phillip Rivers (2 INTs, 58.6 quarterback rating) had a howler in Denver.

Bleacher Report Consensus 19 (LW 13)
If there's one thing that's certain in the NFL , it's that nothing is certain. There were plenty of games that stuck to the script in Week 5. Just about everyone thought the New England Patriots would drill the Washington Redskins...

Remember when people thought the Los Angeles Chargers might actually be a Super Bowl contender after going 12-4 and winning a playoff game last year?

      Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Unfortunately, they're just about the only people who do after a flat performance against the Denver Broncos dropped the Chargers to 2-3 and behind the Oakland Raiders in the AFC West.

Five weeks into the season, the Bolts have all of one win over a decent team. And as Gagnon pointed out, it took overtime to notch that one.

"Here we are entering Week 6 and the Chargers have yet to beat an NFL-caliber team in regulation," he said. "The Dolphins, of course, are hardly even FCS-caliber. We really have to stop believing they'll turn a corner. This is a talented team that is never healthy, never has a reliable kicker and has seen too many black cats cross its path."

It's becoming nearly impossible to take the Chargers seriously as more than an also-ran in the AFC, although with a pair of winnable games on tap, Los Angeles still has time to right the ship and at least challenge for a wild-card spot.

The Chargers had absolutely no business making the game against the Broncos as close as it appeared on paper. Denver is not as bad as their record indicates, but the Chargers lost control from the outset, only regaining command too late to finish a comeback. The Chargers' first points came from a punt return touchdown late in the third quarter. The big takeaway from Coach Lynn's presser is that the Chargers won't beat anyone with that kind of play. Hard to disagree. Pittsburgh is next and presents a must-win situation if the Chargers want to keep pace with the AFC postseason contenders.

PFF NFL Power Rankings ELO 14 (LW 7)
With Week 5 of the 2019 season in the books, PFF releases its NFL Power Rankings ahead of Week 6.

The return of Melvin Gordon did not help the Chargers, as they slumped to a loss at home to the previously winless Broncos on Sunday. They should get back to winning ways against the Steelers on Sunday Night Football, though, and with Joey Bosa currently ranking third in PFF pass-rushing grade among edge defenders, they'll be hopeful that he can force Devlin Hodges into some mistakes.
