The common narrative is way off base.
John Spanos does not spend the hours studying prospects that our scouts do.
    Their input is major.
    The Spanos hate is real.
And on those days when we are not hitting the bong too hard, us fans have the common sense to realize LAC are very methodical.
We are never cutting these players to make room for your guy.
We do not play modern football.

Gruden at least gets it. He wants to build his team with one thing in mind. Beat KC. You cant go anywhere until you can win the west. You need a defense built to limit that offense and an offense built to score with the KC offense. Chargers need to clean house and hire coaches that get this. KC offense is young, talented and not falling off anytime soon.

It’s time we dive deep into Kansas City’s surge in the division through five seasons.

The Chiefs have won their last six games against the AFC West, dating back to Week 17 of the 2018 season. In those six games, the Chiefs have outscored the Raiders, Chargers and Broncos by a score of 180-48, allowing an average of 8 points per game.

The Chiefs have yet to play the Chargers at home this season, which will take place in Week 17. But regardless of the outcome of that game, we can already say that the since 2015, the Chiefs will have a divisional record of either 6-0 or 5-1 each year.

In the three divisional losses the Chiefs have suffered they have lost by a total of 9 points.

In the 29 total divisional games since 2015, Chiefs winning 26 and losing 3, the Chiefs have outscored the AFC West by a combined score of 842-497, allowing just 17.1 points per game while scoring just a little over 29 points per game.

John Spanos was named President of Football Operations for the Chargers in May 2015. He oversees all of the team’s football operations, including player personnel, coaching, player finance and the salary cap, medical, equipment…

In 2003 Spanos began working full-time as a scout. He methodically worked his way up through the organization before his career took a giant leap forward in 2013 when he was named Executive Vice President of Football Operations. This new position afforded him the opportunity to put his first big imprint on the organization, and he did just that as a key member of the selection committee responsible for the hiring of General Manager Tom Telesco.

Spanos has seen his role in the NFL Draft grow exponentially since his ascension in 2013, and the results have been overwhelmingly positive. The 2014 draft class was headlined by cornerback Jason Verrett… the 2017 draft class received high marks from media pundits as the team brought in… Mike Williams and… Forrest Lamp and Dan Feeney.

The 2017 season will mark Spanos’ 22nd year in the NFL and his 19th with the team, with previous assignments within the organization including stints as a pro and college scout (2003-05), assistant director of college scouting (2006-07) and director of college scouting (2008-12).

It’s no coincidence that Spanos’ ascension within the organization coincided with one of the most successful eras on the field in franchise history.
Spanos continues to work closely with McGuire. They have managed the salary cap and retained some of the team’s top players, negotiating multiple contract extensions…

Staying true to his scouting roots, Spanos serves on the board of directors for National Football Scouting and is an Honorary Member of the University of California-San Diego (UCSD) Athletic Board.

Well, if Baby Spanos's promotion to VP of Football Operations in 2013 has resulted in "results" that are "overwhelmingly positive," giving us "one of the most successful eras...in franchise history"...let's take a look at our record since 2013...looks like one good season, three mediocre 9-7 seasons and three losing seasons. Never even won an AFC championship. Hmmm...doesn't look all that overwhelmingly successful to me...

This is what the team is presenting to its' fanbase as the reasons why he has the job and will keep it; these are his accolades as he/the team see them.

The problem is, if he and the team think he's doing this kick-ass job and he has all the paperwork/certificates to make it appear that he has the requisite training to do the job, what would they consider underperformance?

What would it take for the Spanos to pull a Lakers-Buss move and re-assign/remove him from his role?
            :dunno:

Cheap? How so? Have the Bolts spend the salary cap year after year?
Where are they suppose to get additional funds to spend on players?

Cheap as in the Spanos won’t fire GM before his contract ends because then they would have to keep paying the fired GM and a new one.

The Spanos family are extremely poor by sports owners standards. Their net worth is a joke (again, by sports owners standards). This is why they won’t sell the Chargers because they know they would likely invest poorly in any other business with the money they get from selling the Chargers.

All the current Spanos family members are fools at business, only Alex (May he RIP) was the smart one. It’s why none of them have been able to make something of themselves or at least start a big successful other than football with the money they inherited.
Tom Telesco’s Results in 9 years as Chargers GM:

                    - 69-74 record
                    - 0 division titles in 9 yrs as GM
                    - Worst record among all active GMs with same tenure
                    - 6th worst winning percentage among all active GMs overall
                    - 2 playoff wins despite elite QB all 9 yrs
                    - Team still has the same weaknesses (Oline and run defense) that it had when hired as GM in 2013
                    - Consistently puts together horrible depth, expects starters to never miss games

Why does anyone truly believe that Dean is cheap? Because of the Bosa holdout? The holdup of a partial payment for a few months that was TRULY WORTH only $50,000 in interest to Joey Bosa?

Spanos made Rivers the highest paid QB without a ring. Tomlinson got the highest sea at the time for a RB. Same with Gates. Highest paid TE.

I will never ever say he’s a stellar owner, I won’t say it wasn’t a huge mistake to leave SD, but I’ll defend him against such a lame, false narrative as “he’s cheap”.

The Chargers owners aren't 'cheap' with the players as they spend up to the cap. It's that they have loathe to go into free agency for players. They do negotiate hard with their own free agents, and maybe not willing to overpay a veteran, at least to their evaluation, and tend not to negotiate when a player is under contract. I think the Bosa issue was wasn't about the value of the contact as that is set, but more about the terms of the deal that the agents were arguing for that weren't "standard"

I do think they are cheap about coaches, though, in not going after the best possible, and recently going after first-time NFL head coaches. Schottenheimer was an exception as a re-tread, but I think he was relatively inexpensive as well. However, they have no issue of taking former HC's as coordinators.

                          just a financial footnote here:
according to spotrac Chargers have the 3rd least amount of available cap space this year (2.9m).
