Jalen Hurts and the Sooners scored on their first three possessions to take a 21-0 lead over TCU, but the offense sputtered through the final three quarters to hold on for win No. 10. Hurts finished just 11 of 21 for a 145 yards with two touchdowns and a terrible interception but he rushed 28 times for 173 yards and two more scores.

And Hurts' dual-threat ability is what makes him such a great college player. But does that translate to the NFL? Because while he's an amazing runner, he doesn't have Lamar Jackson's athleticism. This means he's going to take a lot of hits from bigger, stronger and faster NFL players. And while Hurts is good for the occasional wow throw, his first instinct is to run, especially when his first read isn't there; his eyes drop, he leaves the pocket and usually looks to make plays with his feet.

Again, that's a perfectly suitable strategy in college but it's a short-lived one in the NFL. Hurts has also struggled with deep-ball accuracy at times this season, including Saturday night. He missed a wide-open Charleston Rambo in the end zone on the first drive, and he overthrew an open CeeDee Lamb in the second half for what could've have been another score.

On the Sooners' third touchdown of the game, Hurts makes a nice back-shoulder throw to Lamb near the pylon, but on the play before, he missed Lamb on a slant -- Lamb had beaten his defender but Hurts threw behind him.

On the drive before, Hurts made his best throw of the night, allowing tight end Brayden Willis to high-point the pass before somehow making his way to the end zone:

For much of the second half, the Sooners relied on the run game, led by Hurts and Kennedy Brooks. Partly because they were successful but also because the passing game was out of sorts. TCU regularly rushed just three and dropped eight, and Hurts never really had an answer for it. Early in the final quarter with Oklahoma leading 24-17, Hurts attempted a simple quick out in the red zone. The ball was deflected and almost intercepted. A play later, Hurts threw again, this time misfiring on a slant route, and TCU picked him off, returning it the length of the field for a touchdown.

On the next series, Hurts relied on his legs to get Oklahoma back into the red zone … where he turned the ball over again, this time fumbling as he went to the ground.

Oklahoma wisely ran the ball on its final 10 plays to escape with the victory. Hurts is undoubtedly an intriguing prospect but he's a one-read passer who would much prefer to run. Again, that works well in college football but is not an optimal strategy at the next level.
Eh, they won. And watching game film shows Hurts is a much better passer than Jackson was coming out of college. I’ll take it. Reminds me of the cracks against Jackson, yet he proved everybody (including me) wrong. Hurts will prove this writer wrong wherever he lands.

Yeah sure, we won't have to sell the farm for Lawrence while picking even later. :wtf2:

Those ending up with worse records than the Chargers will get the better QB in next years draft. The best that the Spanos' can do is get lucky. Real lucky. A Tom Brady pick lucky.

still not sure that Telesco was in favor or overly behind the AL hire, and that it was more of a young Spanos call/executive decision ?? and don't know when his contract is up, and.... would prefer to overpay for David Shaw than bring in Roman.

FA LT of choice is Andrew Whitworth, and.... know it makes no sense at all, and.... if I'm TT I'm giving Marcus Mariota a long hard look @QB going forward, and.... dude is not Tom Brady, and like Riley Neal as a longshot developmental QB in the upcoming draft.

and can't/don't see how we get to the either of Jeaux or Trevor, and don't see the wisdom in going after the China Doll either, and.... not taken by Newman's intangibles @present ??

would also volunteer that there is something (his intangibles) that I do like 'bout Hurts, but am wary of him atm ??

Ok you guys can argue all you want about who the next Chargers QB will be but I'm telling you it will be Justin Herbert from Oregon. So we might as well just be talking about him instead of all of these other Qb's.

If the Chargers continue as bad as they are, Herbert should be available for the Chargers with the #7 pick.. If the Spanos' are determined to keep Rivers, they may go with offensive tackle Tristen Wirfs at the #7 pick. At least that's what some draft pundits predict.

takin' a quick look see @things, could see it unfolding as such....

                        1) Cincy/Jeaux
                        2) NYG/Chase
                        3) DC/Andrew Thomas
                        4) Miami/Tua
                        5) Atlanta/Derrick B.
                        6) Detroit/Isaiah Simmons
                        7) Az/CeeDee
                        8) Jax/Herbert
                        9) NYJ/trade down w/team trading up (in front of the Chargers) for QB/Jacob Eason

                        10) LAC/left w/choice between Fromm or Hurts ??

Fromm is a John Spanos kind of guy who won't make the same mistakes that have tormented (some) Charger fans of late, and.... Hurts is an AL QB waiting to happen.... which way is team manager Tom leaning (Jalen) ??

                        * note to those paying attention/following along @home.... Tristan Wirfs is rumored to be leaning toward returning to school for another year.

ps2. trading up to the seventh slot w/Az, would in theory cost us our third.... drafting Herbert >> not a wise decision/gambit.... selecting Jacob Eason >> risky but perhaps pays dividend in longrun ??
