SF is a legit contender and they want a decent WR. They aren't going to jump through hoops to make a contract work for him, unless he can play. They might if he had done anything for us, and we would still get stuck with some of that contract just to let him go, but they won't.

No. He has $10.8M in dead money this season. Cutting him would put us immediately over the cap ($3.75M immediate hit versus our current $3.128 cap cushion). Next year his dead money hit would be $3.75M but his cap savings would be $3.125M. If he doesn't play well this season then he stands a good chance of getting cut next year, but he still gets paid the last two years of his pro-rated bonus at $1.875M year. Well, technically he has already been paid that money, it is just that NFL teams spread signing bonuses over the full length of the contract.

Meachem signed a 4-year deal last season with a $7.5 million signing bonus (which prorates to $1.875 million per season). He's got a $5 million salary this season, fully guaranteed. So if the Chargers keep Meachem, his cap number for this season is $5 million + $1.875 million = $6.875 million.
If they trade him, his cap number this year for the Chargers is $1.875 * 3 = $5.625 million.
So the Chargers would save $1.25 million in cap space this season (and $3.75 million over the next two seasons) by trading Meachem.
