Our chances of winning are reduced because Staley holds so many players out of preseason. Last year, there was a contingent here really gnashing their teeth about it and making dire predictions. This season, I hear many coaches are intending to emulate Staley.

Its fine to lose, but it does all depend how you lose. If you lose while playing your 2’s against other team’s 3’s … it’s a harbinger we have seen in preseasons of zero depth. If you lose because you’re playing UDFA soon-cuts vs Coach Earnest’s starters, then who gives a rip.

        The Quarterback Betrayal Index

The Athletic's Mike Sando has put together a list of elite QBs who struggle because their team's defense and special teams suck.

Herbert is No. 2 on his list (Brees is No. 1), but Rivers is also high on the list. Interesting read.

These QBs and others such as Aaron Rodgers led strong offenses over the past 10 years while their teams struggled on defense/special teams.

Pair a great quarterback with consistently strong defense/special teams and that team will win Super Bowls, plural. Tom Brady is living proof of it.

Pair a great quarterback with inconsistent or mostly poor defense/special teams and that team might win a Super Bowl, but some will question the quarterback’s ability to get his team over the top consistently. Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees are examples. It’s too early to know whether Patrick Mahomes will join them. Justin Herbert should be watching closely.

        2. Justin Herbert

        OFF 9 | DST 53 | Betrayal Index: -44

        W-L: 15-17 (.469)

W-L with negative team DST EPA: 8-15 (.430, 17th best)

The Chargers struggled on defense and/or special teams long before Herbert’s arrival, which is why you’ll be reading about Philip Rivers shortly. With a defensive-minded head coach and an offseason spending spree on defensive pieces, the 2022 outlook should be positive. A tough schedule of opposing quarterbacks will be challenging, however.

        11. Philip Rivers

        OFF 14 | DST 38 | Betrayal Index: -24

        W-L: 73-76 (.49)

W-L with negative team DST EPA: 23-55 (.295, 25th best)

Rivers’ Hall of Fame candidacy could hinge on whether voters take into account how badly the Chargers’ defense and/or special teams played for much of his tenure, and what effect that had on his ability to win.

From NFL.com I would suggest looking at the top articles today the Bolts are all over it.

          "

Los Angeles ChargersJustin Herbert is dreamy, having thrown 69 touchdown passes in his first two seasons -- that's the most ever, one more than the legendary Dan Marino. And forget all the sparkling statistics for a second: Herbert quite simply makes throws most other quarterbacks can't make. His highlight reel's football porn. Herbert's one of the most valuable stocks in the entire NFL. GM Tom Telesco knows this, having appropriately overhauled the Chargers offensive line over the last two offseasons. Last year, free-agent signees Corey Linsley and Matt Feiler significantly upgraded the interior, while first-round pick Rashawn Slater earned Pro Bowl honors protecting Herbert's blind side. Telesco nabbed another offensive lineman in Round 1 this April, and Zion Johnson has been earning rave reviews in camp at right guard. This is how you protect your top investment!"

Herbert also has a bevy of weapons at his disposal, starting with one of the best receiver duos in football. Keenan Allen and Mike Williams each eclipsed 1,100 yards receiving last season, and their games complement each other so well: Allen's the elite route runner with at least 97 catches in each of the past five seasons, while Williams is the dynamic downfield threat with rare jump-ball skills. I haven't even mentioned Austin Ekeler, which is fitting. Is there a more underrated playmaker in the NFL today? The guy just led the league (alongside Jonathan Taylor) with 20 total touchdowns last season. He's a weapon in the ground game and a matchup nightmare in the aerial attack."

His highlight reel's football porn That is the best comment on Herbert yet!!!! :More Q Please:

No, there is not a more underrated player in the NFL. Ek led the league in scoring; in addition to going toe to toe with Taylor in scoring TDs, Ek scored twice on 2 pt conversions, which led him to lead the NFL in scoring over Taylor.

Ek had 1558 yds from scrimmage in 2021. Deebo Samuel had 1770 yds from scrimmage. But Ek's 20 total TDs were six more than Deebo's 14. Deebo is an NFL darling right now. Ek flies under the radar.

Shame on me. I did not realize Philip has a career record that is below .500. I guess I did not want to believe it.

He doesn't. His actual record is 134-106

Now that betrayal record....can't say I'm shocked. Our defense and STs betrayed him numerous times after giving us a lead.

Herbert. But I think this is a Dan Marino vs. John Elway or either of those two vs. Jim Kelly argument. Unfortunately for current Dolphins fans Tua will most likely never enter the discussion.

Burrow and Herbert will probably be great quarterbacks for a very long time. I'm thrilled to have Herbert as my current quarterback. I'm sure I would feel the same if Burrow were a Charger.
