Cantrell was an exclusive-rights free agent (two accrued seasons or less) so the Chargers could have retained him simply by offering him a contract. They didn't, and the Chargers' website lists him under "Free Agent Departures," so it appears they have no interest in bringing him back. I looked but could not find a rule about whether teams that don't offer a contract to an exclusive-rights free agent, rendering the player an unrestricted free agent, can later sign the player as a free agent.
