I’m an atheist and football gives me what many claim to find in religion
values, meaning and sense of community
      more accurately id say
football the game is the spiritual component
while the NFL is the organized religion piece

Whether the subject is politics, or religion, or climate, or viruses, or sociology, or economic theory,
we are all afflicted by our arrogant attitude of claiming to have the definitive answer.

The Information Age, the advent of the computer, and the creation of the internet have brought us to the point that we have zero tolerance, or even an ear for points of view which deviate from our own.

As always, the problem is not only that our data just might be skewed ie garbage in-garbage out, but that we forget that it is dangerous to trumpet how perfectly correct our ideas must surely be.

The exquisitely precise results of the teachings of the German engineering schools of the 1920s and 1930s led to The Holocaust.
They were so positive they had the Final Solution.

I am eternally thankful that I learned from Dr. Jacob Bronowski that there is in this world a need to constantly seek balance..."Knowledge or Certainty."

Dr. Bronowski died on this day in 1974, and I thank him deeply for the wisdom he imparted upon myself.

We can do better as humans.

Welcome to the South. And, for them, its all about High School and College Football. The NFL is an after thought used for killing time between church and Sunday dinner, or for just fantasy leagues. Some of these people are actually quite scary in the way they go over the top.

I had a roommate from Texas when I was working in No Cal and he is Texas everything and was into high school football.
I asked him once why he was watching a HS football game and he said "some of those guys may end up at Texas". Lol, I thought that was a funny answer but he was serious.

I believe it! Here, the entire Friday night local news broadcasts are dedicated to HS football (complete with highlights!) and Saturday NCAA previews. Oh, they might sneak in the weather forecast...as it relates to Saturdays matchups!

Just seeing this now, FLEET. Thank you. Many, dare I say most of us are here for a diversion from the political/regional/tribalism noise. Keep it up, we're with you.
