Welcome RB Andre Williams, CB Pierre Desir, and DT Caraun Reid

he San Diego Chargers were armed with the third overall position to claim players waived this weekend.

They used their priority position to add three players, claiming CB Pierre Desir from Cleveland, DT Caraun Reid from Detroit and RB Andre Williams from the New York Giants.

Corresponding moves for the three new additions will be announced at a later time.

The 6-2, 206-pound Desir was initially drafted by the Browns with the 127th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He appeared in 19 games with seven starts over his first two seasons, totaling 46 tackles and seven passes defenses. Desir ranked third on Cleveland a year ago with five passes broken up. A native of Port-au-Prince Haiti, the Lindenwood University product won the 2013 Cliff Harris Award as the top small-college defensive back in the country. He finished his collegiate career tied for 11th in Division II history with 25 interceptions, and set a conference record with 52 passes defensed.

Reid is a 6-2, 298-pound defensive tackle that the Lions selected 158th overall in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL draft. He tallied 31 tackles, two sacks and one pass defensed in 26 games with 12 starts over two seasons in Detroit. The 24-year old had a memorable 27-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown last year on Monday Night Football against Seattle. The Princeton product started 37 of 40 games in college, finishing with 168 tackles, 20.5 sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, 10 pass defenses and one interception. Reid also recorded seven blocked kicks and one safety in college.

Finally, Williams is a 5-11, 230-pound runner who was selected 113th overall by the Giants in the fourth round in 2014. He appeared in all 32 games for New York his first two seasons with seven starts, carrying the ball 305 times for 978 yards and eight touchdowns along with 19 receptions for 137 yards. In his first season, he became the first rookie to lead the Giants in rushing since 1999. Williams won the Doak Walker Award his senior season at Boston College, which is awarded annually to the top running back in college football.

I've heard of Desir, good size for a CB. Andre Williams was good in college. I know nothing about Reid.

Chargers claimed DT Caraun Reid off waivers from the Lions.
A 12-game starter last year, Reid is a solid player who just got caught up in the numbers game in Detroit. He is a quality addition for an improving defensive line group. Sep 4 - 1:03 PM

I wasn't expecting any big name additions but I like who we did get. Desir provides size to our DB group, is young, and has quite a bit of playing experience. We're talking about our 4th CB here, he has measurables and potential. Williams provides us with a powerful short yardage back, and has been pretty productive with the Giants when healthy. What he brings as a RB is what our RB group has been missing. Haven't heard of Reid but DET has had a solid DL for years so he seems like a guy that got caught in the numbers. A young DL with starting experience is an improvement over the guys at the back end of our DL rotation.

Andre Williams was the Giants leading rusher in 2014. Im not saying he's good(he's not) but he has had some production in the league.

Plus we have two DL that are not on the roster yet in addition to Reid. I suspect Carrethers is gone soon. The Bolts appear to like the smaller guys who can run out of the play faster than the big conventional NT that can two gap and hold the point of attack.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Desir is an ascending player, very good on special teams too. He is big and physical but was very raw out of a small school. So the Browns invested in him and developed him and...cut him. Fits their M-O very well.

Williams gives the Bolts something they don't have. A pounding, punishing RB. He is all of 230 lbs, runs low, runs with a lot of power. A Michael Turner type but not as fast and was never asked to catch the ball. Unfortunately, he (this will sound familiar) has had trouble as a pro reading blocks, waiting for holes to develop, and fumbling. Had none of those issues in college, perhaps because he had huge holes to run through?

The Lions guy sounds good but I admit I have never heard of him and don't remember him if he played against the Chargers in the opener last year.
