Los Angeles Chargers RB Andre Williams out for the season with wrist injury

The Los Angeles Chargers are down a running back after a wrist injury forced Andre Williams to have season-ending surgery. Andre Williams isn’t often thought about, but he’s important depth for the Los Angeles Chargers behind Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler. Now, he’s gone for the rest of the season (and playoffs?). Williams had played the role of “third RB on the depth chart” admirably this year, if unspectacularly. In 8 game appearances, he has totaled 25 yards on 9 carries.
Perhaps most unfortunate is the timing of this injury, as Williams is coming off of his best game of the season, carrying the ball 7 times for 25 yards against the Washington Redskins.
The Chargers currently don’t have any running backs on their practice squad, so it’s safe to assume that they’ll be searching the current crop of free agents for someone to fill Williams’ role for the remainder of the season. I have a suggestion for who that person could be: All I want for Christmas is Ryan Mathews back on the Chargers.
