The San Diego Padres and New York Yankees have hit a wall in their discussions over a potential blockbuster trade involving superstar outfielder Juan Soto.San Diego asked for right-hander Michael King, pitching prospect Drew Thorpe, and up to five other prospects like right-handers Randy Vásquez and Jhony Brito, sources told Andy Martino of SNY.The Padres are reportedly also looking to include outfielder Trent Grisham in a deal for more salary relief.New York balked at the idea of dealing King and other prospects for a year of Soto before he likely hits free agency, according to Martino, who adds an offer involving right-hander Clarke Schmidt, Vásquez, Brito, and possibly Thorpe could move the clubs closer to an agreement.The Yankees haven't included outfielder Jasson Dominguez, shortstop Anthony Volpe, second baseman Gleyber Torres, catcher Austin Wells, or outfielder Everson Pereira in the trade discussions, sources told Martino.Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays are among other clubs talking to the Padres about Soto, report Ken Rosenthal, Dennis Lin, and Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.The Blue Jays could reportedly pivot to the 2021 NL MVP runner-up if they fail to land Shohei Ohtani in free agency.San Diego is looking for a multi-player package centered around young pitching, per Rosenthal, Lin, and Kuty.Toronto reportedly could send top pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann, right-hander Bowden Francis, or 2022 AL Cy Young finalist Alek Manoah to the Padres.Soto, 25, is projected to earn over $30 million in 2024 during his last arbitration-eligible campaign. The three-time All-Star owns a career .284/.421/.524 slash line with 160 homers and 640 walks over six years in the majors.
