This is the second time the Padres have reportedly been interested in adding Duran, as they were previously rumored to be targeting the outfielder before the 2024 season. So far in 2025, Duran hasn't been able to return to his form from last year, but he is still hitting .265 with four home runs and 44 RBI. The Red Sox have gotten off to a bad start at 29-32, and currently sit fourth in the A.L. East. They have the No. 1 prospect in baseball, , waiting in the wings for a spot to open up in the outfield, so moving Duran could be their path to getting Anthony playing time.
