Before the start of their three-game weekend series in Minnesota the Padres put Xander Bogaerts on the 10-day injured list with a non-displaced left foot fracture, an injury that’s almost certain to keep him out of the rest of the regular season. Bogaerts most likely suffered the injury when he fouled a ball off his foot on Wednesday afternoon in a loss to Seattle. Padres manager Mike Shildt said Friday Bogaerts will be in a walking boot for a week before being re-evaluated. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, in this type of injury the bone is cracked but the ends of the bone stay properly aligned so there’s a good chance Bogaerts can avoid surgery. The typical timeline for recovery is estimated at six to eight weeks, providing faint hope he can return for a playoff run. Infielder Mason McCoy, a defensive specialist, was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to fill the roster spot but it’s most likely that Jose Iglesias will see more playing time at the position while Xander is out. Iglesias is in the lineup, playing short and batting 7th, for Friday night’s game against the Twins. The Padres enter Friday trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers by 2.0 games in the National League West and sitting 1.0 game back of the Chicago Cubs for the top National League Wild Card spot. However, they are 7.0 games clear of the Cincinnati Reds for a playoff spot of any kind and San Diego has the easiest schedule in the Major League Baseball over the final 28 games of the season.
